Plaaz’s cultural history can be explored on two levels: historic landmarks in the village itself, and cultural offerings and other historic sites in the municipality. The wider Rostock destination adds other themes, from nature experiences to museums and narrow-gauge railways. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these geographical levels separate and choosing the focus that suits you.

Historic landmarks in Plaaz

In Plaaz itself, the register of historic monuments dated 14 May 2024 lists two different buildings: a half-timbered house at Dorfstraße 6 and the former post office at Dorfstraße 50. Both are listed as architectural monuments. The entries provide a specific point of reference for local history and also distinguish between two building types: a half-timbered house and a former post office. The buildings are on the same street, and each building’s former function is a distinct part of its history.

Cultural programme and history in the municipality

In Recknitz, Kultur.Kirche.Recknitz offers a recurring programme from May to October on the weekend of the first Sunday of each month. It includes concerts, workshops, theatre, cinema and AusZeiten. If you would like to plan your trip around this programme, check the specific dates before travelling. This allows you to take its seasonal schedule into account without assuming a particular event date.

During the 2026 Recknitz season, Marianne Kindt exhibited her works on the theme “Light – from a golden ground to daylight” in the church; the paintings were on display throughout the season until October. Recknitz is also home to St. Bartholomew’s Church, which dates back to the mid-13th century and is listed as an architectural monument. In the direction of Diekhof lies a notable Bronze Age megalithic tomb. These examples range from a time-specific art event to a historic church building and a prehistoric site.

More historic landmarks in the municipality of Plaaz

The register of historic monuments dated 14 May 2024 also lists architectural monuments in other places in the municipality. In Recknitz, a listed cemetery includes a mausoleum, burial sites belonging to the von Buch family and a cemetery wall. In Spoitgendorf, a manor house with a park is listed. The listed manor complex in Zapkendorf includes a stable block and an agricultural building; in Wendorf, a circular barn is listed as an architectural monument. The places mentioned therefore range from a cemetery complex to manor estates and an agricultural building type. Their names help visitors understand the municipality as a collection of distinct historic sites, rather than attributing all of its monuments to Plaaz itself.

Nature, activities and culture in the wider Rostock destination

The wider Rostock destination offers different ways to enjoy nature and outdoor activities. Sternberger Seenland Nature Park, in the wider Rostock destination, invites visitors to hike and cycle through the deeply cut breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, past numerous lakes and hills, and through extensive forests. In the wider Rostock destination, visitors can explore Wildpark-MV independently or join guided wolf, owl and evening walks. The distinction is clear: exploring the landscape versus taking themed, guided wildlife walks.

The Schwaan Climbing and Adventure Forest in the wider Rostock destination has seven courses for children, beginners and advanced climbers. Its 116.5-metre-long Flying Fox zip line runs directly over the lake. If you are planning a visit, it is worth checking the current status of the facilities. The Wolhynier Umsiedlermuseum in Linstow, in the wider Rostock destination, offers tours for groups and individuals. Using ethnographic objects, photographs and documents, its tours tell the story of the Volhynian Germans from the mid-19th century to their resettlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War.

The historic Molli narrow-gauge railway is a regional attraction in its own right in the wider Rostock destination: it runs between Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast. The wider Rostock destination therefore brings together a range of themes—landscapes, wildlife walks, climbing courses, museums and railway history—while Plaaz and the municipality have their own historic landmarks and cultural offerings.
