Lüssow combines local history with a landscape shaped by waterways and agriculture. The place was first mentioned in 1229; the fieldstone and brick church dates from 1257. There are 28 years between these two dates. This places the early historical reference point in the history of the medieval church; the manor house architecture dates from several centuries later.

Church, manor house and early history

Lüssow Manor House was built at the end of the 18th century. In the 19th century, a solid brick façade and a contemporary extension were added; numerous historic details have been preserved. Compared with the church, dated to 1257, this places the manor house’s construction history significantly later. The Bronze Age burial mound Hilgenbarg is also considered a sight in Lüssow. The church, manor house and mound thus represent different historical periods: from the Bronze Age burial monument through the medieval church to the later manor house buildings.

Waterways and landscape

The Hohen Sprenzer Mühlbach flows through the municipality of Lüssow and empties into the Nebel Canal. There is also a drawbridge dating from 1895 on the Nebel Canal, which is listed as a historic monument. Agriculture shapes the landscape around Lüssow. A specific watercourse and the character of the surrounding area can thus be viewed as two distinct aspects of the landscape.

Fishing is prohibited in the immediate vicinity of the Zepelin weir. If you plan to fish there, take this local restriction into account.

Listed sites and getting oriented

The Rostock district register of historic monuments, dated May 14, 2024, lists several sites in Lüssow. These include the cemetery on Friedhofsweg/Schwiesower Straße, with its gate, Reichhoff grave slabs and mausoleum. The rectory at Friedhofsweg 10 and the railway station at Zum Bahnhof 27 are also listed. The cemetery, with its individual features, differs from the two buildings, just as the rectory differs from the railway station.

For Lüssow (Meckl) railway station, there is an orientation map showing the station, platform and surrounding area, as well as an overview of the next S-Bahn departures and arrivals. The map helps you find your way around the site; departure and arrival information is time-sensitive. Please check these details before travelling.

In the wider travel destination of Rostock

The wider travel destination of Rostock offers further attractions as its own regional context. Sternberger Seenland Nature Park, with its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, picturesque hills and extensive forests, is particularly inviting for hiking and cycling. The Wolhynier Umsiedlermuseum in Linstow offers guided tours for groups and individuals. Ethnographic objects, photos and documents tell the story of the Volhynian Germans from the mid-19th century until their resettlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War. Thus, the wider region offers both nature experiences and a museum devoted to a clearly defined historical subject, while Lüssow’s own distinguishing features lie in its local history, architecture and landscape.
