Kuhs is a typical street village along the B103. The early settlement history and listed architectural styles offer topics to explore during a stay right in the village; the Zehlendorf Moor is nearby. Village history and a connection to nature thus sit side by side.

Early Settlement History and Architectural Styles

A Slavic settlement called “Cuziz” existed here even before Kuhs was first mentioned in a document in 1286.

Listed buildings include a smallholder’s house at Dorfteich 38 and a hall house at Storchennest 23. The smallholder’s house and the hall house are different types of houses.

The Zehlendorf Moor Nearby

The Zehlendorf Moor lies in the Augraben lowlands between the Recknitz and Zehlendorf. The moor itself is not accessible; views of it are possible from the Zehlendorfer Damm. The two sections of the moor are separated by a public path.

This distinction is important when planning a nature outing: the moor is not an accessible area, while the Zehlendorfer Damm offers views of the landscape. It is therefore a nature attraction in the vicinity of Kuhs, not a sight within the village.

More Local History in the Municipality

The village of Zehlendorf, also part of the municipality, also has a connection to Slavic settlement. A settlement called “Zely” is considered the village’s origin; the name means “herb.” “Cuziz” was the Slavic settlement in Kuhs; the settlement “Zely” is considered the origin of Zehlendorf.

A Memorial and Food in Kuhs

The memorial to the Kuhs soldiers who fell in the First World War stands on the spacious grounds of the Landhotel Kuhs and consists of two glacial erratics. Its dedication and the simple form of the two stones give the act of remembrance a tangible connection to the village. The Landhotel in Kuhs also serves food.

More Options in the Wider Rostock Travel Destination

Independent regional options within the Rostock travel destination include Wildpark-MV, Sternberger Seenland Nature Park and the Wolhynian Resettlers Museum in Linstow. At Wildpark-MV, visitors can explore the park on their own or join guided walks, including wolf, owl and evening walks. Visitors can choose between independent exploration and themed guided tours.

Hiking and cycling are the main activities in Sternberger Seenland Nature Park. Its landscape includes deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, hills and extensive forests. The historic Molli narrow-gauge railway also runs between Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan within the wider Rostock travel destination. It is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast and offers another regional cultural attraction.
