Thulendorf brings together a listed church building and its historic furnishings, a gallery Dutch-style windmill regarded as a local landmark, and a new cycling connection. This places architectural and art history alongside a practical opportunity to explore the village by bike. The following details will help you weigh up these highlights for your trip.

The Village Church: Building History and Furnishings

The church building, with its flat ceiling, was probably constructed from fieldstones in the 13th century. Remains of wall paintings have been preserved inside, including a depiction of John the Baptist that is thought to date from the mid-17th century. The simple altar dates from 1664. The church thus combines an early building phase, dated only approximately, with specific details from the 17th century.

The Rostock district’s register of listed monuments, dated 14 May 2024, records the church, cemetery and boundary wall together. It also lists a war memorial in Thulendorf commemorating the years 1914/18. Alongside the church building and its furnishings, the cemetery grounds and another memorial site thus add distinct aspects of the village’s history.

A Windmill as a Local Landmark

A gallery Dutch-style windmill dating from 1906 is a landmark of Thulendorf; it was damaged in July 2026. It adds another chapter to the village’s architectural history, alongside the much older church. Together, the fieldstone church, thought to date from the 13th century, and the 1906 mill represent two clearly distinct historical periods.

Cycling from Thulendorf

The cycle path between Thulendorf and federal highway 110 was officially opened to traffic on 18 June 2026. It is 1,690 metres long and 2.5 metres wide, runs as a separate parallel facility, and connects Thulendorf with the existing cycle path along the B110 from Sanitz to Rostock. It also makes it easier to travel from Thulendorf to the railway station, the municipal administration in Broderstorf or Rostock. If you are planning a ride, it is advisable to check the condition of the infrastructure again beforehand.

Harvest Festival: A Dated Look Back

At the harvest festival on 27 September 2025, the programme began with a traditional service in the well-attended Thulendorf church. The celebrations also included a parade of harvest vehicles, as well as music and games on the festival field. The dated programme thus combined a church service to open the event with a parade and activities in the field.

More to Explore in the Wider Rostock Destination

For broader trip planning in the wider Rostock destination, you could also consider independent excursions and activities. At Wildpark-MV, visitors can explore the park on their own or join guided walks, including wolf, owl and evening walks. The historic Molli narrow-gauge railway runs between Kühlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast. These examples appeal to different interests: nature experiences and guided walks on the one hand, and railway history on the other.
