The four-kilometre sandy and natural beach, the protected steep coast and the Ghost Forest define Nienhagen’s coastal and natural character. The traditional Ghost Forest Festival in August is also a regular fixture on the events calendar. When planning your stay, you can place different emphasis on time by the water, walks in the forest and local events.

Beach, steep coast and water sports

The sandy and natural beach stretches for four kilometres. Three stairways, a natural access point and a serpentine, accessible route lead down to it. Along the steep coast, there are stretches of fine-sand beach suitable for swimming. The water gets deeper gradually and is particularly suitable for children and seniors.

The steep coast consists of glacial deposits and is subject to strict protection regulations. Please take these into account while visiting the coastal section; coastal conditions can vary. The research platform of the Nienhagen reef is clearly visible from the beach promenade.

This coastal section also offers opportunities for surfing and sailing. So there is more to do by the water than just swim. Whether a specific activity is available may depend on the operator.

The Ghost Forest as a nature experience

The Ghost Forest is a mixed woodland of around 180 hectares that surrounds the seaside resort of Nienhagen and belongs to the Stolteraa nature reserve. It is home to oak, beech, hornbeam and ash trees; some are up to 170 years old. Scenic hiking trails are also part of this woodland area.

On long walks, you will encounter bizarre, fairytale-like trees and unspoilt nature. While the beach and steep coast define the open coastal landscape, walks here focus on the shapes of the trees and the mixed woodland. This means two distinct natural settings are available during your stay in Nienhagen.

Events in Nienhagen

The traditional Ghost Forest Festival in August is a regular fixture on Nienhagen’s events calendar. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the specific event dates and schedule your trip accordingly.

The leisure centre at Strandstraße 16, behind the daycare centre, is the venue for most of the seaside resort’s public events. These include exhibitions, concerts and film evenings. If you are interested in a particular event, check its date before travelling.

Planning your journey and stay

The seaside resort of Nienhagen is easiest to reach by car. You can travel by train via Rostock, WarnemĂĽnde or Bad Doberan; connections to onward transport, such as buses operated by rebus, are available at each location. As services and transport options may change, check the timetable and connections before departure.

This lets you plan your accommodation around the activities that matter most to you.

In the wider Rostock destination

Beyond the local area, the wider Rostock destination offers other points of interest. The historic Molli narrow-gauge railway runs between KĂĽhlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic Sea coast. The Sternberg Lake District Nature Park is also part of this regional picture: its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, hills and extensive forests invite visitors especially to hike and cycle. These examples offer different attractions: a historic railway on the one hand, and scenery and outdoor activities on the other.
