Rural landscapes and coastal scenery come together around Wangern. Nearby, Hinter Wangern has a natural beach in a quiet bay, bordering the Fauler See nature reserve. The area around Hinter Wangern is characterised by holiday apartments and farms. The coast, nature conservation and rural village scenery offer a range of ideas for planning your trip.

Ponds and Beach Scenery

The landscape around Wangern includes numerous ponds formed as remnants of the last Ice Age. Some are open to fishing. This brings together different aspects of nature: the bay’s beach and coast shape the scenery, while the ponds tell the story of their glacial origins. Fishing is permitted at some of the ponds. If you are choosing between coastal scenery and pond areas, these features offer two different focuses for your stay.

Beach and Season

Another type of beach is found near Hinter Wangern: beside Poel’s coastal cliff lies a secluded naturist beach. You can also explore the beach and cliff on horseback, but only outside the peak season. If you want to include a ride in your plans, choose your travel dates with this seasonal restriction in mind. The natural beach in the quiet bay and the naturist beach offer different coastal highlights; horse riding is another option outside the peak season.

Getting Here and Getting Around

Bus route 230 serves Wangern, with connections to Kirchdorf, Timmendorf and Wismar. Check the timetable before your trip. There is parking at the beach access in Hinter Wangern. The area also has a well-developed network of cycle paths. These options relate to different parts of your planning: bus connections to the places mentioned, parking at the beach access and cycling routes in the area. When planning your trip, consider which of these options suits your intended activities.

On Poel Island: Culture, Nature and Routes

On Poel Island, architectural history and seasonal beach activities complement the island’s natural scenery. The island church on Poel Island is a Romanesque-Gothic brick church built in the first half of the 13th century. Its 47-metre-high tower is a landmark visible from far across the island. Alongside church services, there are guided tours and visits, as well as numerous concerts. If you are planning a visit or concert, check in advance for suitable dates.

The Poel Erratic Boulder Garden showcases rocks found exclusively on the coasts or in the fields of Poel Island, offering insight into around two billion years of Earth’s history. Birdwatching is another nature activity on the island: the Langenwerder bird sanctuary provides suitable habitats for wading and water birds and serves as a stopover for migratory birds. Gollwitz Beach is very close to Langenwerder; from a beach chair, you can watch rare bird species.

On Poel Island, almost all places can be reached on foot or by bicycle via signposted rural paths. Bicycles can be rented in Gollwitz, Kirchdorf, Am Schwarzen Busch, Kaltenhof and Timmendorf-Strand; check for current rental providers before your trip. The Poel Causeway, with its bridge over the strait known as the Breitling, provides access to Poel Island. During the bathing season, Timmendorf Beach offers watersports such as water skiing, kitesurfing and surfing.
