At Timmendorfer Strand, a bright Baltic Sea beach, a harbour and a lighthouse come together to create a maritime setting. When planning your visit, it is worth considering time at the beach, water sports and excursions on the water as different options.
Beach, Harbour and Lighthouse
The bathing beach at Timmendorfer Strand is around 700 metres long. Its fine, white sand and gently sloping water define the beach; the harbour and lighthouse complete the maritime surroundings. Activities include pedal boating, water skiing, kitesurfing and surfing. When planning your day, you can treat time for swimming and an activity on the water as separate items on your itinerary. After 60 years, the lighthouse was extended to its current height of 21 metres.
Excursions on the Water
Excursions by passenger ship are available in Timmendorf. The trips offered by Katamarancenter Manfred Sommer depart from Timmendorf on the island of Poel. On the Baltic Sea, the centre offers sailing trips and white-water rides.
Bicycles and Accommodation
Bicycles can be rented on the island of Poel in Gollwitz, Kirchdorf, Am Schwarzen Busch, Kaltenhof and Timmendorf-Strand. As rental options may change, check current availability before your trip. In the outlying part of Timmendorf, many holiday apartments and holiday homes offer expansive views of the countryside.
Island of Poel: Culture, Nature and Activity
The island of Poel also offers cultural and natural attractions. The island church is a brick church built in the first half of the 13th century in the Romanesque-Gothic style. Its 47-metre-high tower is a landmark visible across much of the island. Alongside church services, the programme includes guided tours, visits and numerous concerts; check current options and dates before your visit.
The Poel erratic boulder garden offers a different focus: it displays rocks found exclusively along the coasts or in the fields of the island of Poel, offering insight into around two billion years of Earth’s history. The island church and the garden therefore appeal to two distinct interests—architectural history and geology.
Langenwerder is also part of the natural landscape of the island of Poel. The bird sanctuary provides suitable habitats for wading and water birds; migratory birds use it as a resting place. The birdlife thus adds a distinct ecological focus to the cultural and geological attractions.
Almost all places on the island of Poel can be reached on foot or by bicycle via signposted country lanes. Another activity with a set duration is the island paddle: from May to October, a six-hour kayak trip takes place on Thursdays off the coast of the island of Poel and neighbouring islands. Equipment and an experienced skipper are provided for the group circumnavigation of Poel. Plan the trip as a separate, longer block of time and check the dates and providers in advance.
