A narrow hiking trail on the Hohen Wieschendorf headland runs either directly along the beach or above the steep coast. This stretch of coast therefore offers two perspectives to choose from, along with seasonal birdwatching, a marina, golf and historical connections. If you are looking for holiday accommodation, you can choose a place to stay based on these different points of interest.

Beach and trails on the headland

The sandy beach around the marina is equipped with beach chairs. From both trail options, you can look out over Wismar Bay, towards the island of Poel and west across Wohlenberger Wiek. The main difference is the route: directly by the water or above the steep coast. This lets you tailor your walk to the perspective you prefer along this stretch of coast.

Natural environment and seasonal planning

Hohen Wieschendorf Marina is located in the middle of a Natura 2000 protected area. To protect resting and wintering birds, it is closed from 15 October to 15 April and must not be entered during this period. Check these seasonal dates before setting out on a boat trip. From mid-April to mid-October, the marina offers 100 berths, as well as a crane and slipway.

During the summer months, mute swans, dabbling ducks, red-breasted mergansers and gulls gather in the shallow water north of the headland. The salt marsh east of the jetty is closed to visitors and is particularly suitable for birdwatching. The area therefore offers different nature-related interests: seasonal birdlife in the shallow water and the salt marsh as a separate, restricted area.

Golf and cycling

Bades Huk Golf Club has an 18-hole championship course on a peninsula jutting into the Baltic Sea. The course offers a distinct focus alongside the beach trails and birdwatching, combining golf with its location on the headland.

For a bike ride, the signposted cycle path starts at Eggerswiek in the centre of Hohen Wieschendorf village and heads towards Beckerwitz. The starting points differ: the hiking trail runs along the headland, while the cycle path starts in the village centre and is signposted towards Beckerwitz.

Manor history and seasonal activities

The manor in Hohen Wieschendorf was owned by the Bade family from 1778 to 1884. The manor house belonged to the Glantz family from 1912 to 1945. Until the end of the 19th century, Wilhelm Bade organised the first Nordic and polar cruises to the Arctic. The ownership history of the manor and manor house and Wilhelm Bade’s early Arctic voyages are distinct historical topics.

A seasonal event takes place in December: at its Hohen Wieschendorf location, Erdbeerhof Glantz offers freshly sawn Christmas trees for sale and self-cutting every year. This adds a recurring winter activity to the nature-watching opportunities associated with the summer months.

Accommodation in the area

Hohen Wieschendorf has a marina, Bades Huk, a newly developed holiday apartment complex and other holiday accommodation. The area is developing into the main tourist centre of the municipality of Hohenkirchen.
