A nearly continuous belt of reeds and a natural shoreline characterise Lake Wedendorf. The lake covers around 24 hectares and forms part of the “Köchelsdorfer Mühle including Lake Wedendorf” landscape conservation area. Extensive rolling pastures and fields shape the landscape. This gives you two main focuses for your stay: the lake and its trails, and the architectural history of Kirch Grambow and Wedendorf Castle. You can make a walk around the water the centrepiece of your visit or include historic buildings in your day’s plans.

Walking trails by the lake

A walking trail funded by LEADER grants runs around the lake. This makes it easy to plan a walk with the lake as its destination. A walking trail to Lake Wedendorf is also signposted behind the church in Kirch Grambow, allowing you to take a short detour to the water. You can therefore choose between two types of outing: a circuit with the lake as its main destination, or a short detour from the church grounds to the water.

The landscape offers more than just the water: the shoreline is natural, the reed belt is nearly continuous, and the rolling pastures and fields shape the surrounding countryside. As part of the designated landscape conservation area, Lake Wedendorf is a specific destination for anyone wishing to spend time outdoors in a protected area.

Kirch Grambow: church on the eastern shore

Kirch Grambow belongs to the municipality of Wedendorfersee and lies on the eastern shore of Lake Wedendorf. The village church was built in 1267, in the 13th century. Inside the church is a Baroque altar with elaborate carvings, which was brought there in 1691. The dates show the difference between the construction of the church and the furnishings added later.

Wedendorf Castle

Wedendorf Castle was built in 1697 and is privately owned; it can only be viewed from the outside. This means that a visit differs from one to Kirch Grambow: to arrange a guided tour of the church, you can contact Pastor Ortlieb on 038872 / 51 013. The castle can only be viewed from the outside—a key distinction when planning visits to historic buildings.

Northwest Mecklenburg as a regional setting

In the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the north encompasses the “Northwest Mecklenburg Uplands with Wismar Bay” landscape region, while the south includes the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin”. The landscape of Northwest Mecklenburg is also shaped by terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping stretches of coast, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains.

Another landscape example within the wider travel destination is the “Radegast Valley” landscape conservation area. It covers around 600 hectares between the southern edge of Rehna and Lake Neddersee near Gadebusch. It includes the strongly meandering, natural course of the Radegast, as well as adjacent grassland, reed beds, trees and wet woodlands. This regional perspective complements the view of Wedendorfersee with the diverse landscapes of Northwest Mecklenburg.
