Utecht lies right on the shore of Lake Ratzeburg. When planning your visit, consider the village’s history, its lakeside and wetland landscapes, and its cycling and water routes. A signposted circuit around the lake, the Elbtal-Schaalsee circular route that passes through Utecht, and the Wakenitz waterway offer different perspectives on the village and its surroundings.

Village History

Utecht was first mentioned in 1230 under the name “Utechowe” in the Ratzeburg tithe register. The place name points to the village’s earlier existence as a Wendish circular village settlement. The village’s history thus brings together two distinct clues: its early mention in the register and the traditional interpretation of its name. Those interested in the village’s history will find both a specific chronological reference and a link to an older settlement form.

Lakeside and Wetland Landscapes

Narrow reed beds along the shore of Lake Ratzeburg provide a habitat for Savi’s warblers, reed buntings and great reed warblers. Kammerbruch is home to wet forests, spring-fed ash and alder slope forests, and damp and marshy grassland areas. Otters have returned to the eastern shore after intensive nature conservation measures. Nature here ranges from bird habitats in the reeds to wet forest and grassland types, as well as the return of the otter following conservation measures.

Cycling and Water Routes

The Elbtal-Schaalsee circular route passes through Utecht, and the village is also an important access point for cyclists. Another option is a 26-kilometre signposted circular tour around Lake Großer Ratzeburger See, which passes through Utecht and Rothenhusen. When choosing a tour, you can distinguish between the circuit around the lake and the Elbtal-Schaalsee circular route that passes through Utecht: one is a signposted loop with a specified length, while the other is a named route that runs through the village.

Since 1995, the K5 has connected Utecht with neighbouring Rothenhusen in Schleswig-Holstein via the Wakenitz. Rothenhusen also has a historical connection to the Wakenitz: there was a ferry crossing on an island at the river’s outlet from Lake Ratzeburg. This former crossing is distinct from today’s road connection and adds to the history of the waterways around the village.

The waterway serving Utecht and Campow supports canoe tourism. The Wakenitz can also be explored from the northern shore of Lake Ratzeburg to Lübeck by excursion boat or canoe. This means you can plan around both a designated cycling circuit and various options on the water. Which one shapes your stay depends on whether you would rather cycle a route or experience the Wakenitz on the water.

Getting to the Ratzeburg Lakes Cycling Tour

The Ratzeburg Lakes Cycling Tour is accessible by train and bus; Ratzeburg is recommended as the starting and finishing point. Check the latest public transport information before you travel. This lets you plan your journey to the recommended start and finish point separately from your choice of cycling or water route.
