The Uhlenhof monument complex, the show gable of Stoffer’s House and the relocated hall house in “Klein Bullerbü” give Thandorf a distinct focus on building history. Practical orientation points also help with travel planning: the approximate connection to the A20 and the regional Schaalsee sandwich available from a vending machine, though availability may change. This lets you choose where to stay based on building history, regional details and your route there.

Historic Architectural Styles and Details

The Uhlenhof monument complex in Thandorf dates from 1793. Above the Grötdor—the entrance gate—of Stoffer’s House, also known as Rütterhof, is a triple “farmers’ dance.” The house’s show gable is considered one of the most richly decorated of its kind in Mecklenburg. The two sites offer different perspectives: the date takes center stage at Uhlenhof, while Stoffer’s House stands out for the distinctive design of its gable and entrance.

In the village of Schlagsülsdorf, part of the municipality of Thandorf, well-preserved remains of the three-part, fortress-like medieval Plönburg knight’s castle can be found, including a motte, a wide moat and a high rampart. The overall form and individual elements can be distinguished: “three-part and fortress-like” describes the complex, while the motte, moat and rampart are its specific features.

The Hall House in “Klein Bullerbü”

The historic hall house in “Klein Bullerbü” has its own architectural history. It was relocated to Thandorf from Utecht, four kilometres away on Lake Ratzeburg, and rebuilt between 1998 and 2000. Its timber frame is around 200 years old. Today, the building contains three apartments. Three details should therefore be kept distinct when establishing its timeline: its origins in Utecht, its reconstruction from 1998 to 2000 and the approximate age of its timber frame. The move, subsequent reconstruction and surviving building fabric describe different aspects of the same house.

Getting Here and More Local Details

Thandorf can be reached via a connection to the A20 in about eight minutes. As journey times can vary, this is only a guide; allow some extra time for your trip. A beach volleyball court behind the Thandorf village pond was completed in September 2007. The regional Schaalsee sandwich is available from a vending machine in Thandorf. Local availability may change, so check in advance if you plan to make this a stop.

Northwest Mecklenburg as a Regional Setting

The landscapes vary across the wider destination of Northwest Mecklenburg. In the north, the district includes the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape area; in the south, it includes the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” Terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground-moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping coastal sections, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the landscape of Northwest Mecklenburg. The region’s cultural heritage also includes Gadebusch Castle, located in the town of Gadebusch in the district. The Renaissance castle, built in 1573, is considered a rare example of Mecklenburg or North German Brick Gothic Renaissance architecture and features reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style.

The “Radegast Valley” landscape protection area covers approximately 600 hectares between the southern edge of Rehna and Neddersee near Gadebusch. It encompasses the Radegast’s heavily meandering, natural course, as well as adjacent grassland, reed beds, wooded areas and wet woodlands.
