Holdorf combines a fire brigade museum, a circular cycling tour through Holdorf and Meetzen, and destinations to explore on foot. The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Fire Brigade Museum is in Meetzen; the circular cycling tour is about 26 kilometres long. A detour into Holdorf Forest is possible only on foot, and a narrow, winding path leads to the megalithic tombs in the small wood in the Radegast Valley. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between different focuses, from the museum and cycling route to walking trails.

Getting here and finding your way

Holdorf is very easy to reach via the B104 and A20. Holdorf (Meckl) railway station is located at Bahnhof 1, 19217 Holdorf. If you plan to travel by train, check the current connections in advance. The road links and the station’s location are two specific points to include in your travel plans.

Fire brigade museum in Meetzen

The Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Fire Brigade Museum is in Meetzen, a district of the municipality of Holdorf, and within the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve. It displays 5,000 exhibits, including 55 vehicles, trailers and large pieces of equipment. This gives the museum a clear thematic focus for travellers interested in the history and technology of firefighting. The reference to Meetzen locates this focus within the municipality of Holdorf.

Circular cycling tour through Holdorf and Meetzen

The “Tour through the Terminal Moraine Landscape” circular cycling route passes through Holdorf and Meetzen and by the Meetzen cemetery chapel. The approximately 26 kilometres refers to the total length of the circuit. A gently downhill, paved path leads to Holdorf railway station; from the station, the cycling route follows an unpaved road towards Güstrow. This provides both the approximate total distance and specific landmarks and features of individual sections. When planning, it is helpful to distinguish the route length from the information about the surface and course of these sections.

On foot in Holdorf Forest and the Radegast Valley

A detour into Holdorf Forest is possible only on foot. A narrow, winding path leads to the megalithic tombs in the small wood in the Radegast Valley. So plan to explore Holdorf Forest on foot. As trail conditions can change, it is a good idea to check them before setting out.

Northwest Mecklenburg as the wider regional setting

Northwest Mecklenburg provides the wider landscape setting. In the north, the district includes the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hilly Country with Wismar Bay” landscape area; in the south, it includes the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin”. The landscape features that characterise Northwest Mecklenburg include terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, sections of steep and low-lying coastline, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains.

The “Radegast Valley” protected landscape area also extends across about 600 hectares in Northwest Mecklenburg, between the southern edge of Rehna and Neddersee near Gadebusch. It encompasses the strongly meandering, natural course of the Radegast, as well as adjoining grassland, reed beds, wooded areas and carr forests.

Northwest Mecklenburg’s architectural heritage includes Gadebusch Castle, a Renaissance castle built in 1573 in Gadebusch. It is a rare example of Mecklenburg or North German Brick Renaissance and features reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style.
