Carlow brings together nature, architecture and crafts, appealing to a range of interests: the Kuhlrader Moor and Röggeliner See nature reserve, the village church and Keramik Mentz. When planning your trip, it is also important to consider whether a particular attraction focuses on landscape, architectural history or hands-on creative activities.

Nature Reserve and Moorland

The 328-hectare Kuhlrader Moor and Röggeliner See nature reserve is located in the municipality of Carlow. It combines wetlands and bodies of water with wet grassland, hedgerows, reed beds and small ponds. There is a clear boundary within the reserve: Kuhlrader Moor has no paths and may not be entered. A walk through the moor therefore cannot be included in your travel plans.

Carlow Village Church: Architectural History and Details

Carlow Village Church is a neo-Gothic brick building with rib vaulting, a transept and a west tower visible from far away. The choir dates from around 1260; it was built of granite ashlar during the transition from Romanesque to Early Gothic. Architecture enthusiasts can distinguish the stylistic description of the brick building from the specific dating of the choir.

The sanctuary’s vault contains a hanging keystone, considered unique in the area. The organ was built in 1888 by Friedrich Friese, court organ builder to the Grand Duke of Schwerin. The church is located at Schulstraße 6, 19217 Carlow. If you need access to the interior, check locally before your arrival.

Church Square and Ceramics

There is an open-air stage in the church square, used for events in cooperation with the Carlow Cultural Association. These include “Rock an der Kirche” and “SommerAusKlang”.

Keramik Mentz adds hands-on creative activities to the cultural offering. During open workshop hours, visitors can make their own ceramic creations without registering in advance. The offering also includes parent-and-child pottery sessions and pottery sessions for children’s birthday parties. No registration is required for the open workshop hours; the offering may change, so confirm it before your visit.

Northwest Mecklenburg on a Larger Scale

At the broader regional level, the northern part of Northwest Mecklenburg comprises the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay,” while the south includes the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” Terminal moraines, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, sections of steep and gently sloping coastline, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the district’s landscape. This north–south division therefore offers an overview of the different landscape areas at district level.

Northwest Mecklenburg’s cultural heritage also includes Gadebusch Castle in Gadebusch. The Renaissance castle dates from 1573 and is a rare example of Mecklenburg and North German brick Renaissance architecture. Its features include reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style. From a cultural perspective, the village church, with its choir dating from around 1260, and the Renaissance castle from 1573 stand alongside one another as two buildings from different periods.
