Passee can be explored through two distinctive themes: its historic church and motte, and its surroundings, where forests, moors and wildlife all play a part. These offer different focuses for a stay – from architectural and church history to discovering the landscape and nature.

Church and motte: history in one place

The brick church at Kirche und Turmhügel Passee was first mentioned in 1318. Engraved sundials can be found on its south wall. Its furnishings include a mechanical organ built by Friedrich Wilhelm Winzer of Wismar in 1859, and a neo-Gothic altar dated 1866. The altar was reconsecrated in 2022. These dates mark different chapters in the church’s history: its first mention, the construction of the organ, and the dating and later reconsecration of the altar.

The site also includes a well-preserved motte, a type of mound-and-bailey castle with a moat and banks. A freestanding bell frame that once belonged to the church has not survived. The church’s closure from 2008 to 2012 due to the risk of collapse is also part of the building’s history. Together, the church and motte give the place a cultural and historical focus that encompasses both architecture and archaeological features.

Cultural events and planning your visit

The parish organizes small film festivals in Passee village church. Dates may vary. Visits to the church and motte are only possible during scheduled program events, so check the current program before your visit. If you want to plan a film night or tour in advance, the relevant dates and program events are the key timings to check.

Forests, moors and wildlife

The landscape around Passee is shaped by extensive forests, moors and very hilly terrain; these features are associated with a rich variety of species. The deciduous forest complex north and east of Passee contains several burial mounds and Slavic settlement sites. Nature and history come together in the surrounding area, so there is more to explore than just the church.

Cranes and greylag geese continue to breed in the Passee area. The Passee stork also continues to nest in a tree. Conditions for wildlife watching may vary by season. The surroundings are well suited to active recreation, exploring and learning about local flora and fauna – themes that add a biological perspective to the landscape.

Northwest Mecklenburg as a regional setting

Within the wider destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay” landscape area lies to the north, and the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin” to the south. The district’s landscape is shaped, among other things, by terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, steep and gently sloping coastal sections, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. This regional context broadens the view beyond Passee’s immediate surroundings without equating the district’s landforms with local features.

Another regional landmark is the 118-metre-high Lünenberg, the highest elevation in Northwest Mecklenburg and an interesting destination for an excursion. The ridge is a distinct landscape feature at district level, while the church, motte and surrounding forests and moors are the focus in Passee itself.

Choose the focus of your stay

The cultural and landscape themes involve different planning considerations. For a visit to the church and motte, check the scheduled program; for the film festivals, the specific dates are what matter. Those mainly interested in birdlife and the landscape should also take the season into account when setting their expectations for wildlife watching. This helps you tailor your stay in Passee to your interests, without treating visits, events and nature experiences as equally predictable activities.
