Neuburg can be explored through two very different aspects: the church’s long construction history and the events held at Thingplatz. The area around the town also features wooded hills, fields and meadows. If you would like to combine culture and scenery, these highlights can shape your travel plans without requiring an overpacked itinerary.

Neuburg’s Church: Construction History and Features

Neuburg’s church is a brick basilica dating from the first half of the 13th century. It is one of Mecklenburg’s oldest village churches and one of Neuburg’s landmarks. The square tower was completed in 1361. The church and tower thus show distinct medieval phases of construction.

The building history can also still be seen in the former side aisles, which remain visible through closed arcades. Inside is a Baroque altar dating from 1703. There are also wall paintings from different periods, including depictions from around 1400 and Low German inscriptions from 1584. The different dates make clear that the building’s design and features do not come from just one period.

This combination may be of interest to you: the church offers several points of interest if you would like to explore brick architecture, historic construction phases or the features of an old church interior. At the same time, it is a cultural highlight in its own right as a Neuburg landmark, alongside the event venue at Wallberg.

Wallberg and Thingplatz: Stage and Events

Wallberg is a Neuburg landmark and includes an open-air stage. Dance events are regularly held at the woodland open-air stage at Thingplatz. The access steps to Thingplatz are beside the NSV sports club building at Wallberg, providing a specific point of reference for the venue.

Wallberg’s history also includes a successor castle to Ilow, mentioned in 1171. Wallberg thus brings together historical associations and its use as an event venue, without the two needing to be treated as one and the same.

Members of the Neuburger Thingplatzverein invite visitors to traditional Easter and autumn bonfires every year. The castle festival has been the Thingplatz’s main attraction since 1998; its program includes invited jesters and ballad singers. If you would like to plan your trip around a particular festival, check the specific date in advance. Dance events, bonfires and the castle festival offer different reasons to visit Thingplatz, but each requires its own date planning.

Hills, Fields and Paths Around Neuburg

The landscape around Neuburg includes wooded hills, fertile fields and meadows. So, alongside historical and cultural topics, the area around the town is another focus to choose from. The hills and open spaces describe different aspects of this landscape and can complement your interests in nature and cultural heritage.

Some tree-lined country roads near Neuburg provide access to nearby destinations on foot. This is one way to include the surrounding area in your plans; choose specific destinations and routes to suit your stay. If spending time in the landscape matters to you, you can consider this alongside the church and events.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When choosing a hotel in Neuburg, it helps to first decide what brings you to the area: are you most interested in the church’s construction and features, would you like to combine your trip with an event at Thingplatz, or would you prefer to focus on the landscape around the town? If you have a particular festival in mind, check its date before planning your trip around it. You can combine these themes, but you don’t have to.
