Protected coastal landscapes and shallow water shape the scenery of Boiensdorf on the Salzhaff. Stove adds its own cultural note: the Kunsthaus and the Dutch windmill offer themes distinct from the natural attractions. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping the two separate: at Werder, the landscape and stopover sites for birds take center stage, while the surf spot is defined above all by its shallow water and wind direction.

Coastal Landscapes and Bird Stopover Sites at Werder

Boiensdorf lies in a gently rolling landscape of fields, patches of woodland and meadows on the Salzhaff. The Boiensdorfer Werder landscape conservation area covers around 90 hectares and is largely undeveloped. Its natural shoreline includes shallow coastal sections and, in places, steep banks. Salt meadows, lagoons and canals also shape the protected area; large areas are grazed by cattle.

The agricultural land provides important stopover sites for migratory birds, including mute swans and shelducks. How the land is used can change seasonally. Bird stopovers and grazing landscapes thus add another natural dimension to the coastal views: Werder can be explored not only through its shores and waters, but also through its open spaces.

From the viewpoint, the view stretches across the Salzhaff, over Wustrow and onward toward the open Baltic Sea. The Boiensdorf area also offers shallow-water views of Wustrow and the Langenwerder bird sanctuary island. Swimming and long beach walks are among the nature-oriented ways to enjoy recreation at Boiensdorfer Werder.

Shallow Water, Swimming and the Beach

The Boiensdorf surf spot is a shallow-water area with no large waves or strong currents. With westerly to northeasterly winds, it offers a 200-meter-wide area where you can stand. These details indicate the spot’s orientation; actual water conditions depend on the weather. When planning time by the water, you can therefore distinguish between swimming and long beach walks on the one hand, and the surf spot, which is suited to wind and shallow water, on the other.

Visitors coming from outside Boiensdorf can use the beach slipway for a fee. As the fee arrangements may change, it is advisable to check the current charge before using it.

Art House and Windmill in Stove

The Kunsthaus Stove has a sculpture garden and includes a straw-bale and clay house used as a studio. The building was constructed specifically as a studio in 2016. The garden and studio building bring together different art forms: the sculpture garden sits alongside a building whose materials and use are part of the Kunsthaus.

The Dutch windmill in Stove was built in 1889. Its wind-powered mechanism and milling equipment are fully preserved. Visitors can see how wheat and rye are processed into flour and then further processed and baked into bread and other baked goods. Demonstrations may vary. This sets the mill visit apart from the Kunsthaus: the focus here is on historic milling technology and the process from grain to baked goods.

Boiensdorf therefore offers a range of options when choosing a travel destination: protected coastal landscapes, nature-oriented recreation by the water, and the cultural attractions in Stove. When looking for a hotel in Boiensdorf, you can start by asking yourself which of these aspects matters most for your trip.
