Pingelshagen offers several starting points for planning a trip: a long agricultural history, a location on Schwerin’s northwestern edge, and a focus on art and cycling.

History and Art in the Village

The name Pingelshagen became established in the first half of the 15th century. Agriculture shaped village life for many centuries. Together, these two aspects offer a view of different periods: the history of the name provides a point of reference in time, while agriculture appears as a long-term influence on the village.

Art is also part of the local scene. Since 2006, Kreidekreis Pingelshagen has participated in the KUNST OFFEN art programme with group exhibitions. This offers a cultural perspective alongside the village’s agricultural history. If art is to be a focus of your trip, plan around the relevant event dates.

Landscape and Regional Context

Pingelshagen borders Schwerin’s northwestern edge directly and is surrounded by woodland and fields. The surrounding area is considered a lake district near Lake Schwerin. An avenue of fruit trees, the Millenniumsallee, comprising 98 trees, was planted in 2000.

To look beyond Pingelshagen, it is worth placing it within the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg. In the north, Northwest Mecklenburg encompasses the landscape area “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay”; in the south, it includes the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin”. Terminal moraine ridges, gently undulating ground moraine plateaus, sections of steep and flat coastline, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains shape the district’s landscape. Gadebusch Castle is a Renaissance castle dating from 1573, located in Gadebusch in the district of Northwest Mecklenburg, and a rare example of Mecklenburg or North German Brick Gothic Renaissance with reliefs in the regional Johann Albrecht style.

Cycling, Other Activities and Buses

A cycle path connects Pingelshagen with Klein Trebbow. The municipality documented its official opening on 30 June 2023. Hiking, cycling and horse riding are also possible activities in the region around Pingelshagen. Anyone wishing to include a specific cycling route in their plans has a named destination in the path to Klein Trebbow; for other activities, look to the region around the village.

Nahbus serves Pingelshagen on routes 107, 110, 143, 144 and 340. Bus route 18 also runs from Kieler Straße to Alte Gärtnerei/Pingelshagen. Check the current routes and timetables of the Nahbus services before travelling. You should also check the current timetable for route 18 before your trip.

When choosing a focus, several themes are available: local history and art, the surrounding landscape, and opportunities for cycling and hiking. For practical planning, it helps to decide first which of these sides of Pingelshagen you want to focus on during your stay, and then check the relevant connection or event.
