Klütz combines historic buildings with literature, landscapes and creative activities. Visitors planning a stay can explore the town through a range of interests: the literary house and St. Mary’s Church each offer their own highlights, while the narrow-gauge railway, a hike and the butterfly house offer other ways to discover the area. When choosing a hotel, it is worth first considering which themes you want to shape your stay.

Building History, Literature and Landscape Design

Historic buildings shape the townscape of Klütz. They reflect centuries of aristocratic rule, craftsmanship, agriculture and flourishing trade between Lübeck and Wismar. A look at individual buildings reveals different historical periods: the “Uwe Johnson” Literary House is housed in a listed former grain store built around 1890. It contains a permanent exhibition about the writer’s life and work. In this building, the store’s former use and the literary exhibition come together.

St. Mary’s Church offers a different connection to the past through its architecture. Its chancel is the oldest part of the church and dates from the mid-13th century. By contrast, the former grain store dates from around 1890. Together, the two buildings show that Klütz cannot be reduced to a single historical period.

At Bothmer Castle, attention turns to the interplay between architecture and designed landscapes. The Festonallee is one of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s best-known sights. A stroll here offers a chance to experience Baroque architecture and landscape design; the avenue also includes a 270-metre-long sunken lane. Visitors interested in the impact of historic design in the open air will find a different focus here than in the Literary House exhibition or the church’s architecture.

Narrow-Gauge Railway, Hike and Butterflies

The six-kilometre route of the “de Lütt Kaffeebrenner” narrow-gauge railway from Klütz to Reppenhagen runs through the Klützer Winkel countryside. You can travel by steam locomotive or historic diesel locomotive. If you plan to include the railway in your stay, check the operating days in advance. On foot, the easy “Across Fields and Meadows” hike offers a different way to explore the area: it is about 15 kilometres long and starts at the Klütz Tourist Information Office or the “Uwe Johnson” Literary House.

For a visit centred on a very different aspect of nature, there is the butterfly house in Klütz. In its tropical greenhouse, you can observe hundreds of butterflies. Klütz therefore offers several ways to explore: a journey through the countryside, a longer hike and observing the animals in the tropical greenhouse. The route and hike details can help you choose between these options based on the type of activity you prefer.

Creative Activities and Regional Cuisine

Two galleries in the Old Dairy have different focuses. At the “Kein Käse” gallery, visitors can make their own macramé jewellery. The “das Spinnrad” gallery demonstrates how wool products are made using a spinning wheel and loom. One activity invites you to create something yourself; the other showcases the tools and production process. As seasonal visitor information can change, check what is on offer during your stay before visiting.

You can also make dining and taking a break part of your discovery of Klütz. Food options include typical Mecklenburg and regional fare, as well as traditional German cuisine, cafés and homemade cakes. The Klütz Mill also has a farm shop, while the Orangery at Bothmer Castle serves savoury dishes. When planning, you can therefore take regional cuisine and cafés into account alongside architectural heritage, the railway and outdoor activities.

You can shape your stay in Klütz around your own interests: literature and building history, the Festonallee, a train ride or hike, or creative and culinary discoveries. Discover more destinations: Hohenkirchen, Damshagen, Kalkhorst, Zierow, Boltenhagen.
