The Roggendorf Moor borders the settlement of Roggendorf. The medieval church, Roggendorf Castle and its park add further cultural and historical highlights. On the natural history side, a specific restoration measure and the importance of a body of water for waterbirds are also of interest.

Moorland and Nature

Roggendorf is located within the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve. The Roggendorf Moor covers about 240 hectares. As part of its restoration, the Bek stream was relocated to the edge of the moor. Both the size of the moor and a specific restoration measure are therefore central to understanding the landscape.

Goldensee is an important resting and overnighting site for waterbirds. It is also part of the white-tailed eagle's hunting grounds and provides habitat for otters. These details describe different ecological functions: resting and overnighting for waterbirds, hunting grounds for white-tailed eagles, and habitat for otters.

Church and Castle Park

Roggendorf Church is a medieval fieldstone church dating from the 13th century. It contains a High Gothic carved altar and the southernmost votive ship in the Baltic Sea region. Its construction date and fieldstone building style give the church a clear historical context; the altar and votive ship add specific features of its interior.

Roggendorf Castle was probably built around 1895. The landscaped park belonging to the castle is open to the public; check access arrangements before your visit. Below the terrace is a fieldstone grotto dating from 1891, and the park is also known for its sandstone sculptures. The castle and grotto have different dates: the castle is tentatively dated to around 1895, while the grotto dates from 1891.

Breesen: Museum and Café

In the village district of Breesen, the agricultural museum has a café and a collection of historic agricultural machinery and household items. The collection draws attention to farming equipment and objects from everyday domestic life—a different cultural focus from church architecture and park design. Check the current visitor arrangements before your visit.

At Bauernstube Breesen, the café serves homemade cake. Check the current selection before your visit.

Getting Here and the Regional Setting

Roggendorf is on federal highway B 208 and has road connections in all directions. This provides a clear reference for planning your journey by road. Check current road conditions before setting off.

Within the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the north encompasses the landscape area “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay,” while the south encompasses the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” The district’s landscape is shaped by terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coastal stretches, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains. This context adds the broader landscape of Northwest Mecklenburg to the picture of Roggendorf. Within the wider travel destination of Northwest Mecklenburg, the “Radegast Valley” landscape protection area covers about 600 hectares between the southern edge of Rehna and Neddersee near Gadebusch.
