Kneese brings together several distinct reasons to visit: cycling the Schaalsee Cycle Route, exploring orchard culture at the Kernobstmanufaktur, and discovering rural architectural heritage. A public bathing area on Lake Schaalsee is located where former border installations once stood. This gives your plans a mix of exercise, agricultural processing, and historic sites.

Plan the Schaalsee Cycle Route

The Schaalsee Cycle Route is 44 kilometers long, and its stages include Kneese and Dutzow. It usually takes five to six hours, taking up a substantial part of the day. This timeframe gives you a practical guide when adding the cycling route to your daily plans. Dorf Kneese, Arche-Hof Domäne Kneese, and Mosterei und Brennerei Kneese are among the attractions associated with the route. Check route conditions and signage before setting off.

Fruit varieties and processing

The Kernobstmanufaktur Kneese tends an orchard meadow of about five hectares. It preserves more than 100 apple varieties, as well as varieties of plum, pear, and quince. Alongside this variety, processing is also part of what it offers: the manufactory produces single-variety juices and fruit distillates, which you can taste and buy in the farm shop. Each single-variety juice features one type of fruit.

If you bring your own fruit, you can have it processed into juice or spirits there. The manufactory also offers courses on pruning fruit trees. If you are visiting for processing, a course, or a particular product, check in advance whether the service you want is available. The current product selection may also change.

Architectural heritage and border history

Kneese has a former manor house, as well as notable barns, granaries, and stables that you can see. The manor house offers its own historical point of interest; the other buildings provide a broader view of Kneese’s rural architectural heritage. Access to individual buildings may change. If you are planning a visit, check in advance which areas are open to visitors.

The public bathing area on Lake Schaalsee is located where former border installations once stood. This means that the bathing area and the history of the border installations are at the same place. As access conditions may change, check them before visiting.

The Schaalsee landscape and nature conservation

Arche-Hof Domäne Kneese is situated in the natural landscape around Lake Schaalsee and specializes in keeping old pig breeds. These include Bunte Bentheimer, Angler Sattelschwein, and Wollschwein. The farm thus combines an agricultural focus with a specific range of old breeds.

As a nearby natural area, the Niendorf-Bernstorfer Binnensee nature reserve protects Lake Bernstorfer Binnensee, wooded Werder islands, and adjacent near-natural habitats. The reserve supports the breeding of cranes, white-tailed eagles, and red kites. Their presence may vary with the season; the nature reserve’s value therefore encompasses both its habitats and the breeding birds it supports.
