Ventschow’s landscape was shaped significantly by the Weichselian Ice Age. Many lakes and mixed forests form part of the landscape; there are also numerous hiking trails for walks and hikes. If you are planning a stay focused on nature and activity, you can spend the day among trails, forests and bodies of water.
Lakes, forests and wildlife watching
Some parts of the local landscape are designated nature reserves. Orchids and ferns grow in the area. White-tailed eagles and red kites may also be spotted by hikers, but sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. So don’t plan your routes around seeing a particular animal; instead, consider wildlife watching a possible addition to your stay.
Hiking, foraging and fishing
The numerous trails can be used for both hikes and walks. Depending on the season, you can also forage for mushrooms and berries along the way. Applicable nature conservation rules apply, so take them into account when planning. This lets you choose a route based on whether you mainly want to explore on foot or also set aside time for foraging.
Fishing is possible at some local bodies of water with a valid fishing licence. This activity differs from taking a walk: before fishing, check local access and applicable permit requirements. This will help you determine in advance whether fishing fits your plans, without assuming it is available without restrictions. Foraging is seasonal; fishing requires a valid fishing licence.
Cycling route and traces of history
The Schweriner See circular route runs from Hohen Viecheln in the direction of Ventschow. The cycling route passes through the Döpe Nature Reserve and by the rampart of the former Slavic castle of Dobin. The route therefore combines scenery with a historic site whose castle belongs explicitly to the past. Check the current route and signage before setting out.
Getting here by train
In Ventschow, you can use trains on the Bad Kleinen–Rostock railway line. Trains can be used at two platforms every two hours, although not every train stops there. So check the current timetable and stops before travelling. You can also reach Hohen Viecheln by taking a regional train to Ventschow and then continuing by bus. If you plan to use this combination, check the timetables for both legs.
Northwest Mecklenburg as a regional setting
Northwest Mecklenburg comprises different landscapes: to the north lies the “Northwest Mecklenburg Hills with Wismar Bay,” and to the south the “West Mecklenburg Lake District with Lake Schwerin.” Terminal moraine ridges, gently rolling ground moraine plateaus, steep and flat coasts, meltwater and drainage channels, and outwash plains also shape the district’s landscape. Geological outcrops in the surrounding region yield fossils such as sea urchins and Sternberg cakes.
