Bad Kleinen lies right on the water at the northern tip of Lake Schwerin; extensive meadows and woodland shape the area. Two aspects are especially relevant when deciding whether Bad Kleinen is right for your stay: activities on the lake and routes through the landscape and local history. Water sports and swimming go hand in hand with walks and cycling tours, without requiring you to follow a set itinerary. You can plan your stay around whether you are mainly looking for time by the water, exercise on a route or historical sites.

By the lake and along the trails

Lake Schwerin offers opportunities for water sports, fishing and swimming. There are natural bathing spots in Bad Kleinen and in the district of Gallentin; swimming is possible in the Outer Lake Schwerin. Above the bathing area in Bad Kleinen, there is a public car park and a playground.

A walking path right by the lake in Bad Kleinen invites you to go for a walk; colourful information boards explain the area’s history. Hikers can also walk along Lake Schwerin from Bad Kleinen, with views of the lake. Three circular walks, ranging from four to six kilometres, are suggested for Bad Kleinen and the surrounding area. Some sections follow the shore and include points of local historical interest. The route length, lakeshore and history can therefore help you choose a walk. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.

Local history by the water

The Eiertunnel is a pedestrian tunnel beneath the railway tracks. It was built in 1896 to provide access to Lake Schwerin from the water sanatorium in Bad Kleinen, which opened in 1895. Lieps Island is directly opposite; the Eiertunnel offers a picturesque view of the island in every season. The Wasserturmhaus is also part of local history: it is one of the stops on Bad Kleinen’s historical walking tour.

The remains of the former Schwedenschanze earthwork lie between Bad Kleinen and Hohen Viecheln. The six-pointed bastion, built from earth ramparts, was constructed in 1638 to protect the trade route from Wismar to Schwerin. Schwedenschanze is a popular destination for excursions and a resting place with views over Lake Schwerin. Its location between the two towns is also important for understanding the site.

Circular cycling tours with different stops

Cycling Tour 1 runs from Bad Kleinen via the church in Hohen Viecheln, Dorf Mecklenburg, Metelsdorf, GroĂź Stieten and Fichtenhusen, returning to Bad Kleinen. Cycling Tour 2 runs from Bad Kleinen via Wiligrad, LĂĽbstorf, Alt Meteln, Neu Meteln, Dambeck, Drispeth and Zickhusen, returning to Bad Kleinen. The listed stops show how the two circular tours differ. Another option is the GeschichtsTour, a historical cycling tour that starts and ends in Bad Kleinen.

Getting here, events and the surrounding area

Bad Kleinen railway station is one of the oldest and most important railway stations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. As a railway junction, it connects routes to and from Wismar, GrevesmĂĽhlen/LĂĽbeck, Schwerin and BĂĽtzow/GĂĽstrow/Rostock. If you plan to arrive by train, check the connections for your travel dates.

Marina Bad Kleinen is located on the lakeshore. If you plan to visit, check current services and operating conditions in advance. Traditional events in Bad Kleinen include the Christmas tree burning, Easter egg hunt and May festival at nearby Schwedenschanze, as well as village and summer festivals. Dates and programmes vary; if a festival is the reason for your trip, check the relevant dates.

Another natural attraction is the Bad Kleinen Climate Forest on the north shore of Lake Schwerin, about 800 metres northeast of Bad Kleinen. The 1.2-hectare site was funded through Waldaktie MV and is freely accessible at any time. Even though access is described as unrestricted, it is sensible to check local access conditions.
