The observation tower in Dargun offers views from a height of 25 m over the town, Monastery Lake, and the monastery and castle complex. You can explore the town through a variety of interests: views, water, forest trails, and cultural history are just as much in focus as recurring events. The lengths of the forest trails, the 92 steps up the tower, and the range of museum and historical offerings give you concrete points of reference when making your choice.
Views and Activities at Monastery Lake
The observation tower is reached via a spiral staircase with 92 steps. Its viewing platform is 25 m high; from there, you can look out over Dargun, Monastery Lake, and the monastery and castle complex. The climb thus leads to a view that takes in several of the town’s landmarks.
The lakeside promenade at Dargun Monastery Lake is ideal for walks. You can also swim, fish, and go boating there. Walks along the promenade and activities on the water offer different ways to enjoy the lake.
Monastery Complex, Church and Museum
The monastery and castle complex is a venue for numerous events each year, including the Dargun Music Summer. Concerts and church services are also held at St. Mary’s Monastery Church. On a guided tour of the grounds, you can see the imposing walls of the former monastery. The complex therefore offers both cultural events and guided access to its historic walls.
The local history museum “Uns lütt Museum” invites visitors to touch and try things out. Its collection is displayed in 15 rooms and in the outdoor area. The museum is housed in the former guesthouse of the monastery and covers 760 m². It thus combines indoor exhibits with an outdoor area.
Another testament to Dargun’s history is the watermill: a technical monument built as a watermill by Cistercian monks in the 13th century.
Forest Trails and Outdoor Experiences
The forest adventure trail in Dargun’s recreational forest has 15 stations and offers two routes. The “Überläufer-Tour” is 3 km long, while the “Frischlings-Tour” is 1.5 km long. The shorter route is therefore exactly half the length of the longer one—a concrete difference to consider when choosing between the two options.
The historic “Slavic Hillfort” adventure trail offers a different theme and is also located in Dargun’s recreational forest. Information boards explain how Slavs lived and worked more than 1,000 years ago. In the forest, you can therefore choose between the forest adventure trail routes and a cultural-historical theme.
The maze at Waldeck is a special attraction and an experience for the whole family. It covers 8,500 m² and consists of hornbeam hedges taller than a person. While the forest trails differ in length, the maze is defined by its area and the height of its hedges.
Dargun is the gateway to the “Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow” and “Peene Valley River Landscape” nature parks.
