The village church in Groß Teetzleben combines a half-timbered structure dating from 1721 with furnishings whose components span several centuries. The village is also situated in the glacial valley of the Tollense. This gives your stay two clear focal points: architectural and art history, and the landscape around the village. If you plan to visit the church, check in advance whether and when a visit is possible.

Village Church: Architecture and Furnishings

The church has a three-sided east end. At the west end stands a timber-clad tower with a slender, octagonal spire. The east end and the tower form two distinct ends of the building, giving the church a clearly articulated shape.

The carved altar with its Baroque retable dates from around 1500. The shrine depicts a figurative Crucifixion scene; the wings show scenes from the Passion. Additional panel paintings were added in 1739: the Last Supper is in the predella, and the Ascension is in the upper part of the ensemble. The dates make the layers of the altar’s history clear: the earlier work was followed by additional painted panels at a later date.

Other furnishings can also be dated. The bell dates from 1569; the wooden pulpit and baptismal font date from the second half of the 17th century. A total of 17 panel paintings are located on the organ gallery and in the church box pew. The church underwent extensive renovation from 2015 to 2018, with the tower excluded from the work. The organ was restored in 2021.

The Tollense Valley, Cycling Route and Riding Stables

Numerous ponds and meadows are part of the Tollense Valley around Groß Teetzleben. A natural stream also runs between Groß Teetzleben and Klein Teetzleben. Alongside local history, the area’s specific landscape features are therefore a focus: the wider valley with its ponds and meadows, and the stream between the two named villages.

For cyclists, a cycle path along the L 27 connects Groß Teetzleben with Altentreptow. A renovation project for the cycle path was described for 2024; as the surface may change, check its current condition before setting out. The cycle path thus provides a connection between two named places, although the available information does not indicate a travel time. Unlike the cycle path, the stream runs between Groß Teetzleben and Klein Teetzleben.

The riding stables in Groß Teetzleben offer riding lessons for children and adults. Accommodation is also available there for trekking riders. This offers different options for planning an active trip: a cycle-path connection between villages, as well as riding lessons and accommodation in connection with riding tours. Details of the riding stables’ services and availability may change; check both in advance to suit your plans.
