Neu Gaarz combines the history of a manor house remodeled in the Baroque style with paths and activities by the water. There are different options to choose from: riding lessons at the manor house, a swimming spot and a nature trail on Bergsee Lake, as well as opportunities for cycling and exploring the lakes. You can decide whether to focus your stay on local history, exercise or time by the water.
The Manor House and Local History
Neu Gaarz Manor House was first mentioned in 1698 and, around sixty years later, was remodeled as a Baroque building with Neoclassical features. The combination of these two architectural elements gives the house its distinctive historical character. The uses of the manor house and its outbuildings also changed over time: they were temporarily used as the “Kunst- und Kulturkolonie Domäne Neu Gaarz” (Neu Gaarz Domain Art and Cultural Colony), then converted into holiday accommodation, and later also used as a hunting and fishing school.
The older history of the village includes a glassworks settlement from which the estate village of Neu Gaarz probably developed. The glassworks, located between Alt Gaarz and Neu Gaarz, ceased operating in 1749. Alongside the development of the manor house, this points to a probable settlement history and a specific date in the history of the glassworks.
Swimming Spot and Nature Trail on Bergsee Lake
A natural swimming spot with a sunbathing lawn lies on Bergsee Lake, southwest of Neu Gaarz. Swimming conditions may vary. A nature trail is also located on Bergsee Lake, southwest of Neu Gaarz. You can plan these as two different options on the same lake: the swimming spot offers a sunbathing lawn and water, while the nature trail offers a route through the surrounding area. You can decide whether to spend more time by the water or exploring the nature trail.
Canoeing and exploring the lakes by boat are also possible in and around Neu Gaarz. The mooring for the manor house’s Daycruiser tours is on Jabelschen See, near the Müritzfischern. If you would like to include one of these tours in your plans, check its current availability in advance. This makes it easy to distinguish the general opportunities for spending time on the water from the specific Daycruiser tour offering.
Cycling and Riding Lessons
The “Around the Klocksiner Lakes” cycling route passes through Neu Gaarz and continues from the village to Sophienhof. For cycle tourists, Neu Gaarz is therefore part of a route that continues beyond the village. The nature trail on Bergsee Lake and the cycling route offer different perspectives: one is on Bergsee Lake, while the other connects Neu Gaarz with the onward ride to Sophienhof.
Riding lessons for children and adults of all ages are offered at Neu Gaarz Manor House. This adds an option for guests interested in horse riding to the range of activities. Together with the swimming spot, nature trail and opportunities on the water, it gives a varied picture of the area, without requiring the different activities to be combined into a fixed itinerary. When deciding whether to visit Neu Gaarz, you can take your travel group’s interests into account and choose which activities to prioritize.
