The village church and former manor house give Hohen Wangelin two points of cultural and historical interest. The municipality also offers a swimming lake, the Nebel Valley and signposted hiking trails. When planning a stay, it helps to distinguish between the history of buildings in the village and nature destinations across the municipality. This lets you focus on local history, bodies of water or woodland landscapes.

Church and manor house: two historical themes

Hohen Wangelin village church is a brick building with a ribbed vault, probably dating from the 15th century. The ribbed vault structures the architecture with intersecting ribs; together with the brickwork, it defines the building’s form. The church also has a damaged Lütkemüller organ dating from around 1869. It therefore belongs to a considerably later period than the church’s presumed construction date. If you are interested in architectural history, you can keep these two dates distinct: the church probably dates from the 15th century, while the organ dates from around 1869.

The former manor house is the centerpiece of the old manor complex. It adds a different perspective on local history to the church: the focus here is the former manor estate, rather than the architecture of a religious building. This brings two distinct historical themes together if you include culture in your travel plans.

Lakes, trails and woodland in the municipality

Malkwitzer See is located in a scenic nature reserve. In Malkwitz, it is also a swimming lake in the municipality of Hohen Wangelin. The picturesque Nebel Valley is another part of the municipality’s landscape. These places offer distinct points of interest for the nature part of a stay, without forming a set route.

An extensive network of signposted hiking trails runs around Orthsee and Pastorenteich and into the extensive woodland of Nossentiner Heide Nature Park. If you prefer to choose a route around a body of water, Orthsee and Pastorenteich are two different options; the network also leads into the forest. Check the markings locally before setting out, as some individual signs may need to be checked on site.

The Mecklenburg Lake District as a wider setting

Müritz National Park is part of the Mecklenburg Lake District and is characterized by forests, peat bogs, lakes and vast meadows. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail takes in the park’s landscape types and distinctive features over nine stages: it passes lakes, winds through ancient forests, goes by inland dunes and reaches the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours there, including guided visits to the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest at Serrahn and tours from the water. The wider region therefore offers both a hiking trail described as a multi-stage route and guided nature tours as distinct options.

The Damerower Werder bison reserve is located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin, in the Mecklenburg Lake District and Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park. Visitors can observe bison there. The reserve also has a forest adventure trail with climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition with touch-and-see panels, and a dendrophone. These regional destinations complement Hohen Wangelin’s local attractions with additional nature and landscape experiences.
