Grabowhöfe and its immediate surroundings combine visible traces of earlier times with architectural history and a range of leisure activities. At the Old Brickworks, the outlines of a Slavic hillfort dating from the 10th century have been preserved; between Grabowhöfe and Sommerstorf, you can see Bronze Age megalithic tombs. Sommerstorf adds a Gothic brick church and an equestrian centre to these historical attractions. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether landscape history, architecture, equestrian sports or another focus for your excursion should take centre stage.

Animal encounters and rides

An animal park offers the chance to get up close to exotic animals. There are also horse-drawn carriage rides and safari tours in a Dodge or Humvee. Animal encounters and rides offer different experiences. Availability may vary by season, so check which activities are running during your travel dates.

Archaeological traces and architectural history

Visible outlines of a Slavic hillfort dating from the 10th century have been preserved near the Old Brickworks. Between Grabowhöfe and Sommerstorf, you can also see Bronze Age megalithic tombs. These are evidence from different periods: the tombs date from the Bronze Age, while the hillfort traces are Slavic. They are features of the landscape; do not assume they are equipped visitor attractions.

The Gothic brick church in Sommerstorf dates from the second half of the 13th century. Inside is a Baroque altar from the 18th century, decorated with carved figures. If you would like to see the church interior, check in advance whether a visit is possible. The former manor house in Grabowhöfe, known as the “White House,” as well as an old carpentry shop, a smithy and a pigsty are now used as homes.

Horse riding and flying

The Alter Landsitz equestrian centre in Sommerstorf offers horse breeding, training, riding lessons and equestrian sports. The facilities include an indoor riding arena and a grandstand. If riding lessons are important to your plans, ask in advance about current availability.

Flights in gliders and motor aircraft are offered at Vielist airfield, giving you the chance to see the region from the air. Weather and scheduling affect flight operations, so check possible flight days before including a flight in your travel plans.

Nature in the Mecklenburg Lake District

In the wider travel destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District, Müritz National Park offers a distinctive perspective on forests, bogs, lakes and open meadows. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail runs for nine stages through the park’s landscapes and notable features: along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and as far as the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours there, including guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water.

Another nature destination in the Mecklenburg Lake District is the Damerower Werder bison reserve. It is located on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin and in Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. Visitors can observe bison there. The reserve also has a forest adventure trail with climbing activities, an ant house, an exhibition with tactile and visual displays, and a dendrophone. While the national park hiking trail explores landscapes over nine stages, the reserve combines wildlife observation with the various features of its forest adventure trail.
