Schwarz lies on the shore of Schwarzer See. The village church and local history room tell the story of the village; the erratic boulder and stone garden adds a geological dimension. Two cycling routes also pass through the municipality. You can tailor your stay to suit your interests in cultural history, natural history, cycling or activities on the water.

Lake and landscape

Schwarz lies amid extensive forests, rolling fields and meadows, on the shore of Schwarzer See. To the south, the lake joins Zethner See. Glaciers from the Weichselian Ice Age shaped the area around Schwarz. The lakeside setting and the Ice Age-shaped surroundings offer two distinct points of reference for exploring the landscape.

Village church and local history

Schwarz Village Church was built in 1767 in the neoclassical style and has a projecting west tower. The tower defines the building’s exterior, while the fully preserved interior furnishings in simple Rococo forms characterise the interior. The organ, built by Carl Börger in 1907, dates from later than the church’s construction in 1767.

Erratic boulder garden and local history room

The Schwarz local history room features an exhibition on historical village life, as well as fossils, minerals and erratic boulders. The erratic boulder and stone garden in the village centre displays exhibits from the area around Schwarz and is part of the Ice Age Route. A scientifically catalogued stone collection is housed in the former school building opposite the erratic boulder garden. The local history room combines village history with natural history, while the garden and collection explore geology at different locations. Visiting arrangements for the local history room may vary; check in advance to find out about visiting.

Cycling and activities on the water

The 666-kilometre signposted Ice Age Route passes directly through the municipality of Schwarz. The cycling tour “The Southern Lakes Loop” also passes through Schwarz and then continues to Mirow. The routes offer different ways to plan your trip: you can gauge the Ice Age Route by its total length and the Lakes Loop by its onward route to Mirow.

Fishing and paddling are possible on Schwarzer See; motorboats are prohibited. There is a bathing area on Zethner See at Schwarz Camping 48a. It offers free parking, toilets, showers and a campsite. Facilities may change; check what is currently available before your visit. When planning activities on the water, the location is important: fishing and paddling are available on Schwarzer See, while the bathing area is on Zethner See.

More nature attractions in the Mecklenburg Lake District

The Müritz National Park is part of the wider Mecklenburg Lake District travel region; its landscape is characterised by forests, wetlands, lakes and expansive meadows. The Müritz National Park Hiking Trail explores the park’s landscape types and special features over nine stages. It passes lakes, winds through ancient forests, goes by inland dunes and reaches the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours through the national park, including guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water. These regional nature attractions form a distinct focus within the Mecklenburg Lake District.
