Rechlin brings together several different attractions for a stay: the Aviation Technology Museum, boating opportunities at Hafendorf Müritz, well-maintained cycling and hiking trails, and the memorial in Retzow/Rechlin. In the district of Boek, you will also find St. John’s Church and the southern entrance to Müritz National Park. To plan your visit, you could first consider whether aviation history, activities on the water or the sights in Boek are your main focus.
Aviation History at the Museum
The Rechlin Aviation Technology Museum is housed in the historic buildings of the Luftwaffe testing facility of the Third Reich, Northern Group. It traces Rechlin’s aviation history from the beginnings of flight in 1918. This includes the aviation research and training institution on Lake Müritz, the RDLI testing facility and, from 1934, the Luftwaffe testing facility. Further exhibitions cover the post-war history of the site, including its use by the NVA until 1990 and by the Red Army until 1993. The history of the Rechlin shipyard and the town up to the present day is also part of the exhibition. The story therefore extends beyond aviation testing.
The museum also houses the best-preserved boat from a series of which only four examples remain. Guided tours are available by arrangement; please schedule one in advance.
Marina, Boats and Trails
Hafendorf Müritz, a modern marina with around 400 berths, is located in Rechlin-Nord. Here, you can rent motorboats without a licence or prior experience. Canoes, rowboats and pedal boats are also available for hire. As availability may vary by season, it is best to check which options are available during your travel dates before you arrive.
If you prefer to explore on land, Rechlin has well-maintained cycling and hiking trails. So, alongside boating, you can also consider activities on foot or by bike when choosing what to do during your stay.
Memorial and Boek
The memorial to the Ravensbrück concentration camp subcamp in Retzow/Rechlin has undergone extensive renovation. The outlines of five barracks were uncovered and a new path was created to make the memorial accessible to people with disabilities and older visitors.
The Rechlin district of Boek is the southern gateway to Müritz National Park. It is also home to the listed St. John’s Church. It offers another specific point of interest for anyone looking beyond nature and water activities to explore the town’s history.
At Fischer- und Angelhof Bolter Schleuse in Boek, visitors can observe typical local fish in a viewing pond from the terrace: with a little food, they can be lured to the surface. Several ponds covering an area of more than 10 hectares are also available for fishing. Check seasonal availability in advance; if you plan to fish, be sure to clarify the booking requirements as well.
Getting Your Bearings in the Town Centre
Rechlin’s town centre includes a tourist information office and a market square. The waterfront promenade with its pier and restaurants, as well as the boat moorings, have also been redesigned. This means the town offers both central points of interest and an attractive waterfront area to help you find your way around.
