Leizen brings together medieval traces and manor house history. Places to visit in the municipality add to the choice: in Minzow, the church and architecture take centre stage; in Woldzegarten, the bathing area and manor barn. This lets you choose between history, water and cultural events as the focus of your visit.
Getting Here and Cycling Route
Leizen can be reached via the A19, Röbel/Plau exit, or via federal highway B198. The “Medieval Sites between Plau am See and Röbel/Müritz” tour offers a dedicated route for cyclists: it passes through Leizen and then continues through the village to the castle. This gives you two different starting points for planning: travelling by road or following a specific cycling route through the village.
Mound and Manor House History
From the B198, a chestnut avenue, also known as the “Black Path”, leads towards Leizen Manor House and a mound. It was built in the Middle Ages as a defensive structure to protect against raids. The path and the mound’s historical function provide a specific focus for the village’s history.
Leizen Manor House was built in 1898 in the Gründerzeit style, on an almost square floor plan. Another outside staircase leads from the manor house into the park, with its old trees. Leizen Castle is a Mecklenburg manor house from the late 19th century that was converted into a children’s holiday hotel. The conversion was carried out in close coordination with the heritage protection authorities.
Church and Megalithic Tombs in the Municipality
In Minzow, within the municipality of Leizen, there is a village church built between 1860 and 1862 to plans by architect Theodor Krüger in the Neo-Gothic style. Its tower is clad in slate and topped with a kinked spire. The church was completed in 1862 and was the first church building to be constructed in accordance with the Eisenach Regulation. This regulation for Protestant church construction was adopted at the Eisenach Church Conference, held from 30 May to 5 June 1861.
The interior also retains features from the time of construction: a cross-ribbed vault spans the church, while the altar, carved wooden pulpit, baptismal stand, box pews and pews date from the same period. Leizen’s sights also include two megalithic tombs in the direction of Woldzegarten. Together, these places offer a range of historical themes, from the medieval defensive structure to church architecture and megalithic tombs.
Woldzegarten: Manor Barn and Lake Tangahn
Woldzegarten is a village within the municipality of Leizen. The manor barn there has been restored and hosts numerous concerts, cultural events and weddings. If you want an event to shape your visit, check the specific dates when planning.
Lake Tangahn borders Woldzegarten and is a place to swim, walk and relax. The bathing area on the lake is a bathing site reported by the European Union; the municipality of Leizen is responsible for or operates the bathing water. It includes a 100-metre-long beach or shore section. As registration and operational status may change, check current information about the bathing area before planning to swim.
Focus for Your Stay
For a focus on cultural history, you can compare the Neo-Gothic church in Minzow with the manor house in Leizen in terms of their dates and architectural styles: the church was completed in 1862, and the manor house was built in 1898. Key features of the church include its tower, vault and preserved furnishings; the manor house is notable for its Gründerzeit style and almost square floor plan. If you would rather focus on water or events, you can find both at Lake Tangahn and the manor barn in Woldzegarten.
