Walow and Lexow reveal their history through buildings that bear traces of different periods: Walow Castle represents 19th-century neo-Gothic architecture, while the church in Lexow dates back to a medieval predecessor. Other highlights include church art, a manor house with holiday apartments and a megalithic tomb in Hinrichsberg Forest. The details range from building history and furnishings to accommodation options today.

Walow Castle and the Village Church

Walow Castle was built in 1872 on behalf of the von Flotow family. Richly decorated in the neo-Gothic style, it features elaborate brickwork ornaments. The building is privately owned and is being restored in stages.

The church in Walow also offers specific insights into its furnishings: it has a baptismal font. A small room beneath the bell tower serves as a winter church and can be reached by climbing a few steps. Church services are held there regularly, once a month. As the schedule may change, it is worth checking the date before your visit.

Church History and the Manor House in Lexow

The church in Lexow has a long building history: the medieval building burned down during the Thirty Years’ War and was rebuilt in 1637; it was modified several times over the following centuries. Inside are a 300-year-old pulpit and a baptismal angel with a baptismal bowl dating from 1726. The church also has the smallest organ built by Wittstock organ builder F. H. Lütkemüller in the mid-19th century.

The church is used for concerts and exhibitions by Land Art Lexow. Services are held in Lexow two or three times a year; dates may change. If you would like to combine your visit with a service, concert or exhibition, check the relevant dates in advance.

Herrenhaus Lexow was built in 1874. The manor house and estate formed part of the Dobbertin Monastery’s land holdings. Following extensive but sensitive renovation, the manor house now offers holiday apartments and bed and breakfast accommodation. It is a specific accommodation option to consider when looking for a place to stay in Walow; check availability before booking. Another historical landmark, a megalithic tomb, is located in Hinrichsberg Forest.

Nature in the Mecklenburg Lake District

In addition to its architectural and church history, the Mecklenburg Lake District offers a landscape to explore. MĂĽritz National Park is characterised by forests, moors, lakes and expansive meadows. Its hiking trail showcases different landscape types and features over nine stages: it runs along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. If you would like to compare the hiking route with guided nature experiences, the national park also offers informative tours with certified nature and landscape guides. These include tours in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water.

Another nature attraction is the Damerower Werder bison reserve. It lies on a peninsula in Lake Kölpinsee and in the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park, where visitors can observe the animals. The reserve also has a forest discovery trail with climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition featuring tactile and visual panels, and a dendrophone. So, alongside the multi-stage hiking route, the Mecklenburg Lake District offers wildlife watching and a trail with a variety of activity stations.
