Neukalen combines a historic town center with a harbor on the Peene Canal and routes for cycling and walking. For a stay combining culture and nature, you can choose destinations based on your interests: townscape, railway history, or tours on the water and through the countryside. A cycling tour runs around Lake Kummerow; the route to the so-called Aalbude also starts in Neukalen.

Harbor and Boat Trips

Neukalen’s harbor is a few minutes’ walk from the market square, on the Peene Canal, which flows into Lake Kummerow. Redesigned in 1993, it is a meeting place and mooring for water sports enthusiasts. From the harbor, you can explore the surrounding area and waterways by canoe. In the Peene Valley River Landscape Nature Park, watercraft are permitted on the Peene Canal near Neukalen. For motorboat trips, Yachtcharter Schulz is based in Neukalen: it offers modern motorboats for exploring the picturesque Peene River and for trips toward the Baltic coast. Cycling, Rail Biking and Nature

On a cycling tour around Lake Kummerow, it is worth taking a detour in Neukalen to the modern harbor and the historic town center, with its ring-shaped street network. Another cycling tour runs from Neukalen to the so-called Aalbude, along the edge of the GroĂźe Rosin renaturalization area. The flooded area provides a habitat for numerous animal and plant species. White-tailed eagles and migratory birds can be observed there; an observation platform on the edge of the forest offers a view of the landscape.

You can take a rail bike along the Dargun–Salem railway line, which closed in 1996. The route is about 17 km long and leads to Lake Kummerow. Starting in Dargun, it takes about one and a half to two hours to reach Neukalen station. Neukalen is situated amid the biodiverse Peene Valley River Landscape and Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow nature parks, and is a starting point for excursions to explore the local flora and fauna.

Explore Neukalen on Foot

Neukalen’s winding lanes invite you to take a walk through the town. One walking route leads from the market square along Lutherstraße and the promenade, past the former railway station and into the Gartsbruch. The route to Salem is well signposted; the tour ends at Ratmannsteich in Neukalen. The oldest intact fire station in Mecklenburg stands there.

Railway History and Festivals

The Neukalen Railway Museum features an exhibition on the development of railway workers’ uniforms over several centuries. Various shoulder boards date from 1872 to 1918. Five historic railway cars can be seen at the adjacent freight yard, one of which houses a café.

Recurring festivals also shape cultural life in Neukalen. The Neukalen Marksmen’s Guild, founded in 1689, holds its annual marksmen’s festival in the Gartsbruch at the end of June; it takes place together with the club and town festival. Dates and programs may vary from year to year. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check the latest information. Carnival is also part of cultural life in Neukalen, where it has been celebrated on a grand scale since 1958.
