Faulenrost can be explored through several distinct traces: a Baroque castle complex, an older village church in the municipality, and the Ostpeene by the grounds of the “Zum Fischer Fritz” restaurant. Traditional festivals are part of the picture, too. If you are planning a stay, the town is best seen as a combination of estate history, architecture, and regional food culture.

The Castle Complex and Earlier Traces

The Baroque castle complex in Faulenrost was built in the mid-18th century. The manor house, also known as Faulenrost Castle, was constructed around 1760–1764 as a summer residence and is flanked by cavalier houses. The estate complex includes two preserved cavalier houses, two gatehouses, a stable, and a barn. The former English landscape park around the manor house contains the remains of a fortified structure built by the lower nobility, dated to the 13th or 14th century. The estate complex thus brings together architectural history from different periods: the fortification remains date from long before the Baroque complex.

The Village Church in Rittermannshagen

The village of Rittermannshagen, which belongs to the municipality of Faulenrost, also has a notable historic building: the village church is an Early Gothic brick building on a dressed granite plinth. The choir’s roof structure is dated to 1299. A later chapter in the church’s history is the Börger organ, which dates from 1902 and was restored in 2004. The church building therefore brings together a component dated to the Middle Ages and an organ from the early 20th century. The key to the village church is available from the parish house in Rittermannshagen, Dorfstraße 27; please confirm access in advance by calling 0399512268.

Restaurant and the Ostpeene

The “Zum Fischer Fritz” restaurant was founded in 1935 by master fisherman Fritz Schliemann and his wife Henny. Its interior, decorated with fishing equipment, includes two brick smoke ovens and a 100-year-old coal range. The gently flowing Ostpeene runs through the grounds, with a wooden bridge connecting the two sides. On special occasions, smoked fish is brought straight from the oven to the table. If you would like to plan around this offering, ask in advance whether it will be available on your chosen date.

Festivals and Culture

Faulenrost also has an open-air stage as a cultural venue. The Fishermen’s Festival, May Festival, and Harvest Festival are among the town’s traditional events. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the current dates in advance. These traditions complement the estate’s history and the church’s historic buildings with a different way to experience the town: here, community events take center stage instead of architecture.

Mecklenburg Lake District: Nature on a Broader Scale

The broader destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District offers a separate natural setting beyond Faulenrost’s local history. Müritz National Park is characterized by forests, wetlands, lakes, and wide meadows. Its hiking trail explores the national park’s landscape types over nine stages, passing lakes, winding through ancient forests, going by inland dunes, and reaching the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours there, including guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water.

Another nature attraction in the wider destination is the Damerower Werder bison reserve. It lies on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin, in the Mecklenburg Lake District and the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park. Visitors can observe bison there. The reserve also has a forest adventure trail with climbing features, an ant house, an exhibition with tactile and visual panels, and a dendrophone. The comparison can help you choose a theme: Müritz National Park offers a nine-stage hiking trail and guided tours, while wildlife watching and the forest adventure trail are the main attractions at Damerower Werder.
