A horse polo school is considered a highlight for visitors to Duckow. The Ostpeene Cycle Route is one way for walkers and cyclists to discover Duckow. These offer two distinct interests side by side: a clear connection to horse polo and the chance to explore on foot or by bike. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up which of these focuses is closer to your travel plans.

Route and travel to Duckow

Before setting out on the Ostpeene Cycle Route, check the current trail conditions and signage, as both can change.

Duckow can be reached via county road DM 4 and is about 6 km southeast of Malchin. These details serve different purposes for orientation: DM 4 identifies the road connection, while Duckow’s approximate location relative to Malchin places it geographically. This helps you locate the village on a map and plan the specific journey from your chosen starting point.

The road and the cycle route also address different planning needs. The county road provides the road connection to Duckow, while the Ostpeene Cycle Route offers a way to discover the village on foot or by bike. This lets you consider your journey and planned activity separately.

Malchin: Culture, waterways and travel

St. John’s Church in Malchin is a typical example of North German Brick Gothic architecture. It has a Friese organ and a Marian altar dating from around 1430. The Friese III organ is one of a total of eight large Friese III organs in the region and the only one of them to have survived almost entirely in its original condition. To understand the church, it is useful to distinguish between its architectural style and its furnishings: Brick Gothic describes the church building, while the organ and altar are specific furnishings.

The Kalensche Gate is one of the four gates in Malchin’s former fortifications and the best-preserved gate in the town walls. The Fangelturm in Malchin is a six-storey brick defensive tower dating from the 15th century.

The local history museum in Malchin’s town mill has a permanent exhibition about Siegfried Marcus. Tours outside opening hours can be arranged by appointment; check the current arrangements before your visit. Malchin hosts the Mecklenburger Motorcycle and Vintage Car Rally and the Old Town Festival every year; the Old Town Festival includes a traditional procession. Check current announcements for the dates during your trip.

Malchin has a marina as well as the waterway rest stop and harbour “Koesters Eck”; both are connected to Lake Kummerow via the Peene. The waterway rest stop bears the “Yellow Wave”, a quality mark for mooring places. As this status can change, check whether the designation is current if it matters for your plans.

Malchin has a railway station on the Güstrow–Neubrandenburg line. If travelling by train, check the operator’s current information. Malchin’s modern outdoor swimming pool offers attractions for swimmers of all ages. As it is a seasonal facility, confirm that it is currently open before your trip.
