Pensin is located right on the Peene River; the waterway rest area has a canoe landing. There are also heritage sites in Kletzin, Pensin and Ückeritz, as well as a section of hiking trail between Pensin and Zeitlow. This lets you tailor your trip to different interests: travelling by water, swimming, walking or exploring village churches and other parts of historic ensembles. These themes offer several starting points for planning, without prescribing a fixed itinerary.

The Peene River and waterway rest area in Pensin

The Pensin waterway rest area in Kletzin has two guest moorings as well as toilets, electricity and drinking water; there is also a canoe landing. The figure of two guest moorings is based on information from 2018–2019. Check the current facilities before your trip. When planning a stop on the water, moorings and available supplies are two separate practical considerations.

Peene (Pensin) is also listed as a bathing area. Swimming conditions and water quality can change; check them before swimming. Swimming and travelling by water are therefore different reasons to include Pensin in your plans, even though both relate to the Peene River.

A section of hiking trail between Pensin and Zeitlow

In 2017, an approximately 1.3 km section of the hiking trail between Pensin and Zeitlow was completed. This provides a specific walking route alongside the water-based and cultural themes for planning your trip. If you plan to use it, check current trail conditions before setting out.

Churches and heritage sites

The church in Kletzin is listed as a heritage site together with the dry-stone fieldstone wall. In Pensin, the church ensemble, including the mausoleum, cemetery, dry-stone fieldstone wall and gate pillars, is listed as a heritage site. The listed sites therefore differ in their components: in Kletzin, the church and wall are grouped together, while several parts of the ensemble are listed for Pensin.

The old village church in Pensin has a crypt. April to November is listed as the opening period for the church and crypt. As seasonal opening hours may change, check current access arrangements before your visit.

In Ückeritz, the chapel and fieldstone wall are also listed as heritage sites. The sites have different features: a church and wall in Kletzin, the multi-part church ensemble and crypt in Pensin, and a chapel and wall in Ückeritz. If you are interested in local architectural and heritage features, you can choose which of these themes to focus on during your trip.

The Mecklenburg Lake District in a wider context

For a broader regional perspective, consider the wider travel destination of the Mecklenburg Lake District. Müritz National Park is part of this region and is characterised by forests, marshes, lakes and expansive meadows. Its hiking trail explores the landscape in nine stages and leads past lakes, through ancient forests, by inland dunes and to the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours there, including guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water. The national park is therefore a distinct regional nature focus alongside Kletzin’s local Peene River and heritage themes.
