Kentzlin draws attention to architectural history, an old garden, and cheese tasting available on request. Alt Kentzlin Manor House features several architectural details, from its fieldstone foundation to the sequence of rooms inside. The first documented mention of the village dates back to 1300; its name at the time was Cancelyn.

Alt Kentzlin Manor House: Half-Timbering and Sequence of Rooms

Alt Kentzlin Manor House is a single-storey half-timbered house with a half-hipped roof. It stands on a fieldstone foundation and has a largely regular oak post-and-beam frame, just under 20 centimetres thick, with brick infill. These components describe the house’s exterior construction; the floor plan offers a second perspective on its architecture.

Inside, the floor plan comprises a large entrance hall, a centrally positioned longitudinal corridor, and a garden room extending from the entrance area. The rooms at the front are connected by an enfilade—a sequence in which rooms are arranged one behind another and linked together. The manor house displays the widespread room layout of a manor house in a particularly clear and unaltered form. This makes it possible to consider the exterior construction and interior arrangement as two distinct but related aspects of the building.

Garden and Historic Surroundings

Several distinctive features of the garden lie behind the manor house. Four oak trees stand there, between 200 and 500 years old. The garden also includes a motte, an old defensive mound. An orchard with mature trees completes the garden grounds. The oaks, defensive mound, and fruit trees are different elements within a shared local setting.

Another archaeological point of interest lies near the destination: well-preserved remains of a Slavic circular rampart are located around 250 metres west of Neu-Kentzlin. The rampart measures about 100 by 90 metres and is now covered with trees. Its location and approximate dimensions offer another historical perspective on the surroundings of Kentzlin.

Cheese Tasting on Request

A culinary discovery is also possible: Mobile Käserei Kentzlin offers cheese tastings on request. If you would like to include this visit in your travel plans, request a tasting before your trip. This adds a specific experience to the village’s architectural and garden history without requiring a fixed programme.

More Nature to Explore in the Mecklenburg Lake District

For broader travel planning, it is also worth exploring the Mecklenburg Lake District as a destination in its own right. Müritz National Park is part of this region, which is characterised by forests, moors, lakes, and vast meadows. The Müritz National Park Trail covers the park’s landscape types and distinctive features in nine stages: it runs along lakes, through ancient forests, past inland dunes, and to the source of the Havel. Certified nature and landscape guides offer informative tours there, including guided walks in the UNESCO World Heritage beech forest of Serrahn and tours from the water.

Another nature-focused destination in the Mecklenburg Lake District is the Damerower Werder bison reserve. It lies on a peninsula in Lake Kölpin and in Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park; visitors can observe the animals there. The reserve includes a forest adventure trail with climbing opportunities, an ant house, an exhibition with tactile and visual information panels, and a dendrophone. These attractions complement Kentzlin’s local themes with independent nature experiences in the wider destination.
