Kogel combines listed village buildings with several hiking trails along the Schaale. The village’s history is reflected in specific buildings and their former uses; along the river, the unaltered course and its protected landscape take centre stage. This allows you to distinguish architectural and commemorative heritage from nature experiences when weighing up your travel interests.

Village history at specific addresses

A listed barn stands at Caminer Straße 54. Dorfstraße is home to two other listed buildings: number 36 is a listed half-timbered barn belonging to the former forester’s lodge, while number 37 is a listed half-timbered house that once served as a school. These addresses therefore represent different building types and former uses. A memorial to those who fell between 1914 and 1918 is also listed. It adds a distinct place of remembrance to the architectural history.

Hiking trails and fishing rules along the Schaale

Several hiking trails lead along the Schaale from Kogel. They offer a chance to experience the unaltered river in all its variety. The Schaale is protected along its entire 38-kilometre course. The trails start in Kogel; the protected status, by contrast, applies to the entire river course.

The Schaale is also of interest to anglers: the fishing waters directory covers the stretch from Kogel to its mouth at the Sude. Specific restrictions apply. Wading is prohibited in the Schaalelauf nature reserve and in the maintenance zones of the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve; in some areas, only two hand-held fishing rods may be used. Anyone wishing to fish should observe the rules that apply to the particular stretch. The conditions for hiking along the river therefore differ from those for fishing in it.

More to explore in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination

The wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination also offers its own cultural history. Ludwigslust Palace was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg. Together with its park and the town, it forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The late Baroque town layout is almost entirely preserved and includes a former court church and an English-style landscaped park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. The ducal residence, town layout and museum thus offer a different focus from Kogel’s former village buildings.

Guided tours at Zarrentin Abbey cover the history of the former Cistercian convent, the nuns’ lives and the architecture. The ground floor houses a permanent exhibition about the abbey. As dates and access arrangements may change, we recommend checking current visiting information in advance.

The Kalkflachmoor near Zarrentin is another nature-related attraction in Ludwigslust-Parchim. It is part of the Schaalelauf nature reserve and can be explored from the nature trail. Thus, alongside the river landscape near Kogel, the wider destination offers other distinct cultural and nature attractions to choose from.
