Kuhlen-Wendorf can be explored through its varied building periods and styles: its churches range from medieval brick buildings to a half-timbered church, while manor houses add to the picture from the 18th century through to the late 19th century. Lake Mickow and a described stretch of the Warnow River add a natural highlight.

Churches in Brick and Half-Timbering

The church in Müsselmow dates from the late 15th century and is a Gothic brick building. Its outer walls are made of brick, the tower's base is made of fieldstone, and the tower itself is built in half-timbering. Fragments of 18th-century murals add to its architectural features. The combination of materials—brick walls, a fieldstone tower base and a half-timbered tower—makes its construction easier to identify precisely than a date alone.

The church in Holzendorf provides an earlier point of comparison: this brick building dates from the 14th century. Opposite the church stands a lime tree with a circumference of 7.5 metres. The rectory belonging to the church dates from 1779. The older church building and the later-dated rectory can therefore be placed at different points in the area's history; the lime tree adds a natural feature to the architectural setting.

Another building style can be seen in the village church in Zaschendorf, a half-timbered church dating from the 17th century. Alongside the brick churches in Holzendorf and MĂĽsselmow, it adds a half-timbered church to the comparison.

Manor Houses and Their Architectural History

The manor houses provide further points of reference in time. The Tessin manor house dates from the 18th century; the Nutteln manor house is a historic, single-storey brick building with a small tower, dating from the late 19th century and situated on Lake Mickow. Wendorf Hunting Lodge was built between 1904 and 1906 in the Art Nouveau style, also known as Historicism. Together, these building dates span the period from the 18th century to the early 20th century.

Zaschendorf Manor House has its own history of development. Built around 1820, it stands on elevated ground and is surrounded by a park. After falling into ruin, it was partially rebuilt and is now inhabited. Its history thus encompasses its construction, subsequent decline, partial reconstruction and present-day occupancy.

Lake Mickow and the Warnow River

Lake Mickow is part of the Warnow Lakes Nature Reserve. A described stretch of the Warnow runs from the rock ramp at Zaschendorf-MĂĽsselmow to about 350 metres before its mouth at Lake Mickow. It is 2.3 kilometres long. Wading with a fishing rod is prohibited year-round along this specific stretch to protect the freshwater pearl mussel. If you plan to fish, check the current water regulations in advance and observe this restriction.

Wendorf Castle Hotel

Wendorf Hunting Lodge is now the Wendorf Castle Hotel. The building is therefore both a historic structure and a specific hotel option when looking for accommodation in Kuhlen-Wendorf.
