There are two distinct points of interest in Techentin itself: the late Gothic village church and a cycling tour that passes through the town. In the municipality, you can also visit the Seewiesen meadows near Langenhagen, as well as the church and local history museum in Below. This distinction helps you match the local attractions to your interests.
Church and cycling route in Techentin
The village church in Techentin is late Gothic, built from fieldstones and bricks, and has a wooden tower. The “Day Tour through the Langhagen Seewiesen” cycling route also passes through Techentin. This brings architectural history and cycling together here, although they appeal to different travel interests: the church offers a specific architectural landmark, while the route appeals to cyclists. You do not need details about the tour’s length or duration to understand its connection to the town.
Cranes and nature in the municipality
There are two observation stations in the Langenhagen Seewiesen meadows near Langenhagen, within the municipality. The local association offers guided tours. During the autumn bird migration, up to 2,500 cranes can be seen there each day for several weeks. The season is an important factor when planning: crane migration takes place in autumn, and the number refers to the daily maximum. If you are considering a guided tour, ask about dates in advance.
Areas of the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heide Nature Park also form part of the landscape of the municipality of Techentin. The nature park connection is therefore at the municipal level. Together with the observation stations and autumn bird migration, this makes for a nature-focused theme distinct from the village church and cycling tour in Techentin itself.
Church and local history in Below
Below has a single-nave church. Its exterior walls are made of fieldstones quarried in the surrounding area and, in part, monastery-format bricks. The church in Below was first mentioned in a document on April 8, 1299. This date marks its first documented mention, not necessarily the year it was built. Compared with the village church in Techentin, different details take centre stage in Below: the single-nave structure and its materials here, the late Gothic style and wooden tower there.
The local history museum in Below displays historical objects donated by residents of Below and the surrounding villages. Visits can be arranged by phone at 038736 / 814031. The Plattschnacker social breakfast at the museum is listed as starting at 10 a.m. on the first or second Sunday of the month. Check the specific event date in advance.
Culture in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim travel region
Beyond Techentin and its municipality, the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim travel region offers further cultural and historical attractions. Ludwigslust Palace was the former residence of the Mecklenburg dukes. Together with its park and town, it forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace is the centrepiece of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town layout with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. Inside the palace, visitors can learn about art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. This regional perspective thus extends from the municipality’s village churches to a royal residence, town layout and courtly culture.
Guided tours at Zarrentin Abbey cover the history of the former Cistercian nunnery, the lives of the nuns and the building’s architecture. There is also a permanent exhibition about the abbey on the ground floor. If you are planning a guided tour or a visit to the exhibition, check dates and access in advance.
