Vielank combines a well-preserved village layout with the Vielanker Brauhaus and its own herd of aurochs. This brings together a range of interests: the form of a historic village, insights into brewing and cuisine, and a connection to nature and wildlife. If you choose a destination based on these themes, Vielank offers several concrete starting points for planning your trip.

Rundling Village and Village Square

Vielank preserves the layout of a Rundling village, with a block-and-strip field system around a central village square. Several older farmhouses remain; their gables face the village square. The terms describe different aspects of the village landscape: “Rundling” describes the arrangement of the village around the square, while the block-and-strip field system refers to the associated pattern of fields. Together, they draw attention to both the settlement layout and the agricultural organization of the surrounding fields.

The farmhouses also make the village layout tangible: their orientation toward the village square connects individual buildings to the larger plan of the Rundling. If you are interested in rural settlement patterns, you can therefore explore Vielank not only through individual houses, but also through the layout of the village.

The Vielanker Brauhaus: Brewing and Cuisine

In more recent times, the Vielanker Brauhaus on Lindenplatz has become the center of Vielank. It makes its own beers and Fassbrausen—sparkling soft drinks—using fresh spring water from Vielank and its own recipes. These are complemented by seasonal country-style cuisine, with ingredients sourced predominantly from the region. The in-house distillery offers a selection of liqueurs, spirits and single malt whiskies. The brewery thus brings together brewing, cuisine and distilling, each of which offers a different perspective on the area.

Brewery tours offer insights into the production, bottling and storage of Fassbrausen, beers and spirits. The beer seminar has a different focus: it explains how raw ingredients are turned into finished beer. The tour therefore covers several stages of the process, while the seminar looks at the journey from raw ingredient to drink. You can inquire about dates for tours and the seminar.

Aurochs and Protected Areas

The Vielanker Brauhaus has its own herd of aurochs, which graze year-round on 180 hectares of meadow. The aurochs safari on offer lets you see the animals up close. If you plan to include this activity in your itinerary, check current booking options in advance.

The Vielanker Brauhaus is located directly within the Mecklenburg Elbe Valley Nature Park and forms part of the Elbe River Landscape Biosphere Reserve in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In addition to village life and the brewery, animal husbandry and these designated protected areas are also part of what defines Vielank.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim

The wider destination of Ludwigslust-Parchim offers other cultural and historical attractions. Ludwigslust Palace was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg. Together with its park and the town, it forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace lies at the heart of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town plan, with a former court church and an English-style landscape park. The palace also presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The Dömitz Citadel offers a different architectural perspective: it is a Renaissance fortress laid out in the form of a pentagon, with bastions, casemates and a drawbridge, following an Italian model. The regional examples are therefore quite distinct: from the palace and courtly domestic culture to a fortress and its military architecture, while Vielank’s local focus is on its village layout and brewery.
