Friedrichsruhe combines wide-open meadows with a visible trace of its castle past: the former circular rampart of Friedrichsruhe Castle. There are also extensive cycling tours through the beautiful surrounding countryside and insights into the rewetting of woodland and moorland. The surrounding community also broadens the historical perspective: Frauenmark, Ruthenbeck and Neu-Ruthenbeck offer a variety of points of interest.

Meadows, cycling tours and rewetted areas

Vast, seemingly endless meadows stretch around Friedrichsruhe. The scenic surroundings invite you to enjoy extensive cycling tours. The meadows and active exploration of the area offer two different ways to experience the landscape. Woodland and moorland near Friedrichsruhe have been and continue to be rewetted. This landscape theme therefore encompasses both ongoing and completed rewetting projects.

The hillfort as an archaeological highlight

The former circular rampart of Friedrichsruhe Castle is visible. The castle is considered one of Mecklenburg’s most thoroughly researched hillforts and an outstanding archaeological monument. The visible rampart and its archaeological classification complement one another: the circular rampart is a tangible trace of the castle, while its designation as an archaeological monument highlights its importance as archaeological evidence. Those interested in historic fortifications will find a clear focal point here.

Two themes with clearly defined durations

A three-hour woodland walk starting and ending in Friedrichsruhe follows traces of the Slavic past. The tour about rewetting also lasts three hours and starts and ends in Friedrichsruhe. On request, a forester explains how rewetting works and which animals and plants benefit most from it. The tours have the same duration but cover different subjects: the Slavic past on the one hand, and rewetting and its benefits on the other. Ask about the availability of both tours before planning your visit.

Art, churches and early settlement in the community

The Gemmenkreuz, a cross set with precious stones, is considered the most valuable painting in Frauenmark Church. Significant old interior paintings were uncovered there in the 1970s. A medieval wall painting depicts Saint Martin of Tours dividing his cloak and is considered one of the oldest equestrian depictions in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Frauenmark thus brings together a remarkable cross and a wall painting with a clearly identifiable subject.

Ruthenbeck village church is a simple fieldstone church. In Neu-Ruthenbeck, a megalithic tomb, also known as a Hünengrab, near the B 321 points to early settlement in this area. The community’s historic traces therefore range from ecclesiastical art to archaeological evidence of early settlement.

Another cultural highlight in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination

Ludwigslust Palace was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg. Together with its park and the town, it forms an ensemble known as the “Little Versailles of the North.” The palace is also the centrepiece of an almost completely preserved late Baroque town complex, with a former court church and an English-style landscaped park. The palace presents art and courtly residential culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries. This courtly theme complements the archaeological and rural historical traces around Friedrichsruhe and in the surrounding community.
