In the municipality of Greven, religious architecture and family history take centre stage: LĂĽttenmark is home to a small half-timbered chapel dating from the 17th century, while Granzin has a mausoleum and old tomb slabs associated with the von Stern family. The two places have different points of interest and offer specific highlights for a cultural exploration.

LĂĽttenmark Chapel: Half-timbering, Stone Wall and Interior

LĂĽttenmark Chapel and its cemetery are enclosed by a dry-stone wall. During extensive renovation work in the 1990s, the chapel was given a new roof structure and covering; its tower was also renovated. Inside, tall lead-glass windows and brass wall lights shape the atmosphere. They make the space feel bright and festive. Here, the 17th-century half-timbered chapel stands alongside later renovation work on the roof and tower. If you plan to visit the chapel, check access arrangements in advance.

Granzin: Mausoleum and Tomb Slabs

A neo-Gothic mausoleum belonging to the von Stern family stands in the south-western part of the cemetery at Granzin village church. A coat of arms is set in the gable; the pointed-arch windows feature richly coloured figurative stained glass. Old tomb slabs in the cemetery also refer to the von Stern family. Two different forms of remembrance are thus evident: the mausoleum as a separate building and the tomb slabs as a link to family history. Compared with LĂĽttenmark Half-Timbered Chapel, the neo-Gothic style, gable and coloured stained-glass windows are particularly striking here.

Further Historical Connections

The chapel’s location directly on Federal Highway 195 is a useful point of reference when finding your way around Lüttenmark. Another historical connection is the old altarpiece from the predecessor church of Greven village church: it is now on loan at Klockenhagen Open-Air Museum. If you plan to visit the open-air museum specifically to see this piece, check its current loan status in advance.

Culture in the Wider Ludwigslust-Parchim Destination

In the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination, Ludwigslust Palace offers a different cultural and historical focus. It was the former residence of the dukes of Mecklenburg and, together with its park and town, forms an ensemble described as the “Little Versailles of the North”. The late Baroque town layout is almost entirely intact and includes a former court church and an English-style landscaped park. The palace presents art and courtly domestic culture from the 18th and early 19th centuries.

Dömitz also offers a range of cultural and historical perspectives. The museum in the fortress covers the history of the fortress and town, the history of the Elbe, harbour and bridges, Fritz Reuter, as well as special exhibitions and art exhibitions. Dömitz Citadel is a Renaissance fortress built on the Italian model, in the shape of a pentagon with bastions, casemates and a drawbridge. The exhibition topics and the fortification’s distinctive architecture thus provide different perspectives on cultural history.

At Zarrentin Monastery, guided tours explore the history of the former Cistercian nunnery, the lives of the nuns and the building’s architecture. There is also a permanent exhibition about the monastery on the ground floor. Visitors interested in its history can choose between a guided tour and an exhibition as different ways of learning about it. Check dates and access arrangements before planning a tour.

Nature in the Wider Ludwigslust-Parchim Destination

Alongside its cultural attractions, the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination also offers a connection with nature: the limestone fen near Zarrentin is part of the Schaalelauf Nature Reserve. Visitors can explore the fen from the nature trail. This provides a distinct landscape-based theme alongside an interest in buildings and exhibitions. When choosing an excursion, visitors can clearly distinguish between historic cultural sites and the experience of nature at the limestone fen.
