The Bretziner Heath, donkey walks and village culture offer different ways to plan a trip to Bengerstorf. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, the focus of your stay can guide your choice: natural surroundings, a donkey tour or a cultural event. The Bretziner Heath is located in the municipality; the EselPfad and the “Teich und Töne” festival take place in Groß Bengerstorf.
The Landscape of the Bretziner Heath
The 34-hectare Bretziner Heath FFH site is located in the municipality of Bengerstorf. It is a nature reserve on the edge of the Flusslandschaft Elbe M-V Biosphere Reserve. An ancient heathland site, it lies between the Schaale and Boize valleys in a gently rolling area of old glacial moraine.
The habitat described includes open areas of heather and nutrient-poor sandy grassland, some with extensive wavy hair-grass growth, as well as surrounding pioneer woodland. The landscape therefore comprises more than just open heathland: the transition to the pioneer woodland also shapes the description of the area. The Schaale and Boize valleys also provide the heathland’s natural-geographical context.
Information Boards and Landscape Management
A total of four information boards in the municipality’s localities provide information about the region’s nature and history. Boards were installed and officially unveiled in Bengerstorf in 2024. Their topics include the Bretziner Heath Nature Reserve, the River Schaale, the origins of Wiebendorf’s distinctive architecture, cranes and pollarded beeches. If you are interested in regional history as well as the landscape, the boards offer further points of interest.
The municipality of Bengerstorf and the Biosphäre Elbe MV support association offer an annual landscape management event in the Bretziner Heath, where volunteers can take part. To participate, check the next date and practical details with the organizers.
Donkey Walks in GroĂź Bengerstorf
The EselPfad in GroĂź Bengerstorf offers walks accompanied by donkeys. The listed options include discovery, taster, cross-country and gourmet tours, as well as individual tours. The walks are suitable for families and groups of up to twelve people. If you have a particular tour in mind, it is worth confirming dates and availability with the provider.
The routes on the discovery and gourmet tours lead to burial mounds and beaver lodges in the Bretziner Heath Nature Reserve. On these two tours, partners of the biosphere reserve treat participants to a picnic of culinary delicacies.
Village Culture and Architectural History
The local chronicle describes “Teich und Töne” as a cultural event held every year on the first weekend in October at the central village pond in Groß Bengerstorf. Traditionally, a children’s festival was also held on Sunday. If you want an event to shape your stay, check in advance whether there is a current announcement for your travel dates.
Another tangible piece of architectural history can be found at Hufe XIII in GroĂź Bengerstorf. An inscription on the lintel of the front gable dates the house to 1632. It names Schulze Jochen Manke as the client and carpenter Albrecht Mutel as the master builder. Alongside the natural attractions, a dated house and the names of the people involved in its construction are local cultural points of interest.
