In Banzkow, two different ways of exploring the area come together: routes along the Stör and traces of village life and history. When planning your stay, it helps to consider their different scales. The towpath offers a cycling and hiking route of about 13 kilometres; at around 95 kilometres, the Lewitz Circular Cycle Route is much longer and passes through Banzkow as one of its stages. In the village, the museum, church and mill add cultural history to the picture.

Cycling, Hiking and Waterways

The towpath along the Stör runs from Mueß along the river to Banzkow, then continues along the Stör Canal to Gaartzer Bridge. Its approximately 13 kilometres provide a clear guide when choosing your route. If you are considering a longer cycling route, the Lewitz Circular Cycle Route is around 95 kilometres long and passes through Banzkow, which is one of its stages. The two figures therefore describe routes of different lengths, not the same stretch.

The Stör Waterway also helps orient visitors exploring the area by water. This 22-kilometre connection between Lake Schwerin and the Müritz-Elde Waterway consists of the Stör and the Stör Canal. The Stör flows through the Stör Valley, past Plate and on to Banzkow. The Stör Waterway’s gentle current makes it suitable for canoeing and paddling. In Banzkow, spacious boat landings have been built on both sides of the bridges; check their condition locally before your visit.

This gives you two distinct perspectives for planning: a cycling and hiking route with named endpoints, and a waterway suitable for canoeing or paddling. Which one plays a bigger part in your stay depends on whether you want to explore on foot or by bike, or make a trip on the water the focus.

Museum, Church and Mill

The Störtal Museum Banzkow is dedicated to the theme “Living, Working and Life in the Countryside.” Its 300 square metres showcase Banzkow and life in the surrounding area, including rural life in Mecklenburg and traditions that have developed over the centuries. The museum offers a local perspective on everyday life and history, while the village’s buildings provide further points of interest for a cultural walk.

The neo-Gothic brick church in Banzkow was consecrated in 1875, after three years of construction. The village church also houses a listed organ by Schwerin organ builder Friedrich Friese, which has been played since 1884. Four design features at the village entrances combine traditional elements with Pop Art style; they were installed in 2007. Together, these details offer different points of interest: architectural history, a historic instrument and a design that combines tradition with a modern style.

Another notable address is the thatched Dutch-style windmill “Lewitz Mühle,” dating from 1874. It has been restored and now houses the “Zur Lewitz Mühle” mill restaurant, serving Mecklenburg cuisine, as well as a country hotel with a wellness area. The mill, restaurant and country hotel are all part of this named location, adding a specific place to stay to the range of cultural attractions and waterways.

Culture in the wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination

The wider Ludwigslust-Parchim destination also offers its own cultural highlights. Ludwigslust Palace was the former residence of the Dukes of Mecklenburg and forms, together with its park and the town, an ensemble known as the “Versailles of the North.” The ensemble is at the heart of an almost completely preserved late Baroque townscape and also includes the former court church and an English-style landscape park. The museum in Dömitz Fortress covers, among other topics, the history of the fortress and town, the history of the Elbe, harbour and bridges, and Fritz Reuter. These regional examples broaden the cultural perspective on Ludwigslust-Parchim.
