In Denkte, hiking trails into the Asse meet a local history told through archaeological finds, early documents, the church, and mining. From the town center, trails lead through the Asse, past the ruins of Asseburg Castle and on to the Bismarck Tower.

Hiking Trails and Destinations in the Asse

The route from the town center leads into the Asse and passes the ruins of Asseburg Castle on the way to the Bismarck Tower. There are also marked hiking loops, Nordic walking routes, and geo-educational trails in the Asse. The Asse ridge offers opportunities for walks and longer hikes.

Cycling is another option: a tour along the Eulenspiegel Cycle Route passes through GroĂź Denkte before returning to WolfenbĂĽttel.

Asseburg Castle was built as a hilltop castle in 1218 and was one of the largest castles in northern Germany. Today, the hiking trail passes its ruins.

Archaeological Finds and Early Mentions of the Town

The area between the Asse and the Ă–sel is one of the oldest settlement areas in the former Duchy of Brunswick. The earliest documentary references to Denkte date from the 9th century: a deed of donation to Gandersheim Abbey records the name Mark Dengdia in 856. Historical records for the districts also go back a long way. Neindorf was first mentioned in a document in 822; the first credible documentary mention of Sottmar dates to 1146.

Archaeological finds add evidence from other periods to these written dates. Sherds and a bronze fibula dating from around the 6th century were found in Klein Denkte. Excavations at the Asseblick development site in Groß Denkte uncovered hearths and sherds indicating activity around the time of Christ’s birth.

Church, Mining, and Upheavals of the 20th Century

The church in Klein Denkte is first mentioned in writing at the beginning of the 16th century. Among its oldest surviving parts are the base of the tower, the western half of the church walls, and the east wall with two niches. Its windows were fitted with leaded glass between 1955 and 1957.

The air raid on the same date hit Groß Denkte particularly hard: much of the town was destroyed, and it no longer had a traditional old village center. In Klein Denkte, surviving parts of the church form part of the historical record; in Groß Denkte, the extensive destruction shaped the village’s appearance.

Mining is another chapter in the area’s history. Work began on the Sascha shaft in Neindorf in 1898; a second shaft, named Emil, was sunk nearby in 1913. Almost 1,000 people worked at the Denkte mining complex before water seeped in and flooded the shafts on October 31, 1921.
