The “Baddeckenstedt and the Innerste” circular route begins at Baddeckenstedt station. It initially follows the B6 for a short stretch before climbing up to Ziegeleiteich pond. From there, the view extends across the Innerste Valley as far as the Brocken. The route’s progression from the station up to the pond gives the tour a clear scenic focus.

Circular Route and Nature Watching

The circular route begins and ends at the station. You can also start and finish the tour anywhere else along the described route. This lets you choose your starting point within the route. Trail conditions can vary; check them before setting out.

There is another nature spot nearby: about 1 km west of Baddeckenstedt, a shelter built as part of the intermunicipal Innerste Cycle Path project offers views over the ponds of the Paul Feindt Foundation in the Innerste floodplain. Various bird species and dragonflies can be observed at the ponds without disturbing the animals that live there.

The view from Ziegeleiteich pond and the wildlife-watching opportunities at the shelter offer different highlights. On the circular route, the view stretches across the valley as far as the Brocken; at the shelter, the ponds and their wildlife take center stage. This lets you focus on the local features that interest you most, without presenting both places as part of a single route.

Nature and Culture in the Wider Wolfenbüttel Destination

In the wider Wolfenbüttel destination, Elm-Lappwald Nature Park offers a landscape of its own. Located in the districts of Wolfenbüttel and Helmstedt, it covers 470 square kilometers and brings together extensive forests, valleys, protected wetlands, heathland, spring-fed streams, and small lakes. Away from the main roads, the nature park invites you to hike, cycle, and explore. Its hiking and cycling trail network covers about 500 km, with signposted circular routes, parking areas, and shelters.

The wider destination also offers a varied cultural scene. Wolfenbüttel’s historic half-timbered old town includes around 1,000 half-timbered houses. Wolfenbüttel Castle developed from a medieval moated castle and is the second-largest castle in Lower Saxony. It houses the only original high-Baroque state apartments preserved from the former state of Brunswick. Its architectural history thus connects different historical periods.

Literary and intellectual history also have a place here: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing lived in Lessing House in Wolfenbüttel from 1777 to 1781. The Herzog August Library was founded in 1572 and is regarded as the “eighth wonder of the world.” At the Bürger Museum Wolfenbüttel, themed displays present unusual and typical exhibits from 500 years of city and civic history. The Gardeners’ Museum focuses on the production and marketing of local fruit and vegetables, as well as the Wolfenbüttel market gardeners’ nearly 300-year tradition.
