Wittmund combines striking architectural history with insights into traditional crafts and paths through woodland. St. Nicolai Church, the Peldemühle and the Wittmund Forest, which covers more than 700 hectares, each offer a different focus. If you are looking for accommodation in Wittmund, you can use these themes to help shape your stay—from urban culture to walks and cycling tours.

Church history in the center of Wittmund

The historic St. Nicolai Church has been at the heart of Wittmund’s city center since the 18th century. It is Evangelical Lutheran and has a sandstone portal. The present building was constructed in 1775/76 as a Late Baroque brick hall church with an attached west tower; it was consecrated as a hall church in 1776. The two dates mark different stages: construction and consecration. Around 1370, Wittmund’s church was expanded into a fortified church, also described as a castle. The history of the church building therefore extends beyond the construction period of the present building.

Mill, pedestrian zone and aviation history

The Peldemühle was built in 1741 for pearling barley; the original complex also included a residential building and a barn. It is considered the oldest single-storey gallery Dutch windmill in northwestern Germany. In the historic bakery, visitors can see how grain is processed from flour into bread. A visit to the mill thus connects architectural history with a vivid insight into a traditional craft.

The Wittmund pedestrian zone is home to historic buildings such as the Brandtsche Giebel; the zone runs around St. Nicolai Church. The “Hands of Fame” promenade is also located here: public figures have left their handprints on clay plaques. The site includes the Bundespräsidentenplatz, unique in Germany, which was inaugurated in 2010. The Robert von Zeppelin and Aviation Museum opened in the pedestrian zone in June 2015. It displays aviation items from a private collection alongside works by local artists. The museum explores Wittmund’s regional history, which is closely linked to aviation, and introduces younger visitors in particular to the historic airfield “Wittmundhafen.”

Forest paths and traces of the past

The Wittmund Forest covers more than 700 hectares and offers paths for forest walks and cycling tours. Its distinctive features include a chestnut avenue and a circular forest bog described as a glacial Pingo ruin. An observation platform offers a view of this designated natural feature. The Wittmund Forest nature conservation center is an educational institution focusing on nature and environmental topics.

The castle park also combines green spaces with Wittmund’s history. Its paths run alongside the water; benches offer places to rest, and various waterbird species can be observed there. The site of Wittmund Castle, built in 1461, lies within the surviving ramparts. An information board in the park explains the history of the former castle complex. In summer, the castle park is used for music events, among other things; you can check the specific dates before your visit.

Cycling tour, market and practical planning

Cyclists can choose from two different routes: the fourth stage of the Tour de Fries passes through Wittmund and is marked with a blue, yellow and green logo. The Jan-Schüpp Fahrradpad runs partly along the Harle, the old shipping route between Carolinensiel and Wittmund. This route can be started or finished at any point. Check current conditions before setting out on your ride.

The weekly market in Wittmund’s market square offers fresh regional and non-regional products. Siuts-Mühle was built in 1884 and renovated in 2006; it now houses the Die Mühle restaurant. As restaurant operations may change, check in advance whether it will be open during your visit.

Regional bus services are available for getting around, including the holiday bus network in East Frisia. You can plan train journeys using Deutsche Bahn’s journey planner. As routes and timetable details may change, check connections before travelling.
