A 44.75-metre-high lighthouse within the dyke, a green beach at the southern tip of Butjadingen, and activities on the Wadden Sea give Eckwarderhörne its distinctive character. There are also routes for cycling and walking, as well as a seasonal ferry for bicycles and passengers. When choosing your destination, you can therefore choose between the history of buildings and landscapes, Wadden Sea experiences, and routes along the dyke.

Lighthouse and regional history

The Preußeneck upper light stands within the dyke at Eckwarderhörne. Following several years of restoration, the 44.75-metre-high lighthouse reopened as an observation tower in 2017 and was made accessible to the public. Its observation platforms are at heights of 18.40 and 34.50 metres, offering views of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.

The engine house stands right next to the tower and has been converted into a documentation centre. Using modern presentation technology, it showcases the history of the lighthouse, the region and the era, as well as the cultural landscape history of Jade Bay and the Outer Jade. This brings the history of a single structure together with that of a wider landscape.

Green beach, Wadden Sea and tides

Eckwarderhörne’s green beach lies at the southern tip of the Butjadingen peninsula. It is predominantly green, with grassy areas. At high tide, conditions are favourable for water-based activities. Tide levels are therefore an important planning factor if you want to include such activities in your stay.

The “WATT 4 Kids” mudflat walk in Eckwarderhörne includes using landing nets, shell experiments and observing lugworms. Guided mudflat walks are also offered at the green beach. At the current table, visitors can use their own muscle power to set in motion a water-filled model of Jade Bay. The activities offer different experiences, from exploring the mudflats to seeing the currents in the Jade Bay model in action.

Routes along the dyke

The 20.38-kilometre circular route “TOUR 07 – from Tossens to Roddens” offers views over the dyke in Eckwarderhörne. The 7.1-kilometre “Meeresspuren” walking route leads from Tossens to Eckwarderhörne. Their different lengths and route types make it easy to distinguish between the two: one is a circular route, while the other is a connecting route that ends at Eckwarderhörne.

The German Siel Route also passes through Eckwarderhörne, following the dyke towards the municipality of Stadland. Alongside the two routes mentioned, it provides another option for getting your bearings locally, with its own course and direction.

Ferry and travelling with a dog

During the season, the “MS Harle Kurier” bicycle and passenger ferry operated by Warrings crosses the mouth of Jade Bay between Eckwarderhörne and Wilhelmshaven. As timetables may change, it is best to check the schedule before making your plans.

Eckwarderhörne has a fenced grassy area of 1,500 square metres for dogs. Dogs can run off leash in the dog park. This gives you a specific place to go when you are out and about with your dog in Eckwarderhörne.
