In Berne, you can explore church history, cycling tours, wildlife watching and activities on the Weser. The different highlights help you plan your stay around your interests—from historic buildings to walks and water-based experiences.

Church, Art and Local History

St. Aegidius Church in Berne dates from around 1240. It is a three-aisled Gothic hall church made of sandstone and brick; its construction is attributed to the 11th, 13th and 14th centuries. The furnishings also invite a closer look: the altar from 1637 and the pulpit from 1639 were made in Ludwig Münstermann’s workshop.

Another way to explore local history is to visit Breithof. It served as a court site from pre-Christian times until the end of the 20th century. The KulturmĂĽhle Berne offers a year-round program of theater, exhibitions, concerts and readings. The KulturmĂĽhle Berne association is responsible for preserving the protected historic Wefer Mill.

The local history museum in the municipality of Berne displays kitchen equipment, tools of the trade and everyday objects from the region dating from the past 100 years. Berne thus brings together a range of historical themes: the church’s architecture and furnishings, Breithof’s long history as a court site, and everyday objects in the museum.

Warflether Sand and Juliusplate are nature reserves in Berne. Juliusplate’s nature reserve features the “Nature Tourism Route”: a walking trail with information boards about the area’s significance for natural and cultural history. You can watch birds at Kiekpad; walks along the dikes and scenic picnics are also possible.

In GlĂĽsing, the Wesermarsch Stork Care Station looks after white storks. You can view them at close range by request. Check in advance whether a visit can be arranged for your preferred date.

The “Water and Wide Open Spaces” cycling tour starts in Berne/Ohrt, follows the Weser towards Lemwerder and passes, among other places, Juliusplate and Warflether Sand. One route is approximately 53 kilometers long; the other starts in Berne/Ohrt and follows the Weser towards Lemwerder.
