The Dörverden Windmill is visible from far away. It is not possible to visit the interior, but as a landmark visible from afar, it is still a striking introduction to the town’s history. The Ehmken Hoff cultural heritage site offers another way to explore the past: it is home to two old, restored farmhouses that have once again been listed as historic monuments.

Local history and culture in the municipality

At the Ehmken Hoff cultural heritage site in Dörverden, two historic, renovated farmhouses serve as a cultural centre and meeting place. A variety of exhibitions are held there throughout the year, including a permanent exhibition on archaeological finds from the surrounding area. The historic buildings and exhibition themes highlight different aspects: one focuses on the architectural history of the farms, the other on the region’s past.

Other cultural attractions can be found in different districts of the municipality. In Hülsen, the cultural association offers guided tours of surviving traces of the history of potash mining. The Information Centre for Potash Mining gives visitors an impression of the area’s economic boom at the time and what life was like then, with objects, tools, salt cores, miners’ clothing, pictures, plans and graphics. In Barme, a district of the municipality of Dörverden, the Wolfcenter provides information about wild wolves that are once again spreading naturally in Germany.

Water infrastructure and crossings

The Dörverden barrage comprises four components: a lock, a weir, a power station and a fish ladder. These water engineering structures offer another way to explore the area. In the municipality, the Weser can be crossed via the hydroelectric power station built in 1914. A solar-powered ferry operates on the Aller. If you plan to use this crossing, check the current timetable in advance.

In the wider Verden travel destination, there is also a seasonal crossing over the Dörverden Weser weir: from 15 March to 15 October, pedestrians and cyclists can cross the Weser there. The route includes steps; side channels are provided to wheel bicycles along. Check the current conditions before travelling. This helps distinguish the crossings mentioned above and the information specific to each one.

More to explore in the wider Verden travel destination

In Verden district, the Aller Cycle Route follows a circular route between Verden and Rethem. Another regional attraction is the “Dünengebiet und Halsetal bei Verden-Neumühlen” nature reserve. At the transition from the northern slope of the Verden dunes to the lowland of the Halsebach stream, complex, closely interwoven habitat structures can be found. The area is distinguished by its special character and beauty, and marked hiking trails lead through the protected area.

Architectural history is also part of the wider Verden travel destination. Etelsen Castle was built in the Historicist style. Its façade has been preserved in its original form, while its halls, salons and corridors have been restored in the style of the period. Another historical attraction is in Diensthop: visitors can look inside a replica burial mound. A vertical cross-section cuts through the mound, with a massive oak tree coffin standing in front of it.

The Historic Sheepfold Quarter in Hülsen has a total of ten listed barns forming an ensemble. Two are used as exhibition spaces for old farm and craft equipment and can only be viewed from the outside. On baking days during the summer months, bread and butter cake are baked there using traditional methods. Visitors can also learn how the baking is done and how the oven works. This summer activity adds a distinct seasonal highlight to the region’s cultural offering.

Tailor your stay

For planning purposes, it is worth distinguishing between the town of Dörverden, other districts of the municipality and the wider Verden travel destination. The windmill and the Ehmken Hoff cultural heritage site offer insights into local history; Hülsen and Barme add further attractions within the municipality. The wider travel area has its own cultural and natural highlights. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in Dörverden, you can first decide which of these themes you’d like to focus on.
